Canadian General: 'U.S. Policy Is Not To Defend Canada' In The Event Of A Missile Attack

National Post: 'U.S. policy is not to defend Canada' in the event of a missile attack, general says

Participation in the ballistic missile defence program would be costly, but, amid nuclear threats, it appears we are no longer under the protective umbrella of the U.S.

Politicians approach most subjects with open mouths, but they are rarely at a loss for words.

That’s why the testimony at a House of Commons defence committee, specially convened to consider the thorny problem that is North Korea, was so memorable.

Honourable members were stumped by the testimony of Lt. Gen. Pierre St-Amand, the Canadian who serves as deputy commander of North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) in Colorado Springs.

Conservative MP James Bezan asked St-Amand whether he agreed with the common Canadian perception that the Americans would shoot down an incoming intercontinental ballistic missile heading for a Canadian city, even though Canada is not a participant in the U.S.’s ballistic missile defence program. His response jolted the committee members from their late-summer stupor.

“I’m being told in Colorado Springs that U.S. policy is not to defend Canada. That’s fact I can bring to the table,” he said.

WNU Editor: An attack on Canada will kick in NATO provisions .... so yes .... the U.S. will defend Canada, but (probably) only after the attack.

Yeah, its a case of tragically invoking article 5 after you have been annihilated! Not much point after that!

US supply of ABM's is quite limited. You are Prez and you see Quebec under ICBM attack do you use your limited ABMs or save them and risk New York, Chicago, LA, DC?

Canada was invited 10 years ago to participate and refused to this day. I'm US president I ignore any ICBMS landing in Canada.

The US cannot defend everyone of us without us paying a fair share. It's just impossible.

Maybe Canada could spend more on the defense budget and less on immigrating the destitute.

Seems to me Canada has the functional equivalent of a coast guard but a navy ... not so much.

Genghis Khan had no plan for world conquest. It just happened so ...

Until the Tangut. Xia empire, was conquered and then the Jin Empire, Genghis probably did not look farther than that.

The Jin empire like other 'Chinese' empires used trade markets to encourage good conduct (i.e. not raiding the Chinese).

The Mongol khans relied on the trade markets to keep the flow of luxury goods coming to keep their people happy.

The Jin empire was not pleased with the Mongols, so they embargoed the Mongols. Genghis attacked.

Is the lesson that, if you refuse to trade with someone, you should be attacked? Will be Attacked?

Japan attacked China. So we embargoed Japan. We got Pearl Harbor all gift wrapped.

It does not hurt IMO to take out petty dictators and work your way up to larger ones. That way soft pudge guys get the hint. You have to be consistent though. Attacking Qaddaffi was not consistent, wise nor just (He had already cried uncle.). Attacking Assad would have been.

Maybe North Korea just asks Canada to pay up or else. What will the non-scrapper, Trudeau do?

Putin is a scrapper. Some call him a thug. But many people in the U.S. admire him, because he is not a 'Welcome Mat'.

If you are dealing with Kim Jong Un, do want a Putin or a 'pretty boy' like Trudeau?

Canada. What a bunch of crybabies. You get a nuke on Toronto and the US gets some fallout. See we can share.

Azino,

I have a hard time to make Kim Jung Un the same size as Genghis Khan. Second, Canada is not the first target of NoKo. If yes, what about Brazil, Angola and else?

Jason the fallout comes with the US screwing around with the world order.
