Miami Herald: In Cuba, many Hurricane Irma victims are asking themselves, where is the government?
Surrounded by the remains of her home in Isabela de Sagua, a town on the north coast of central Cuba, a little girl tells a state television reporter what she lost during Hurricane Irma, which lashed across most of the island.
“The bathroom, the bicycle, the fan, a sweater of mine,” says the girl. Nearby, a woman with her hands on her head stares in disbelief at the remains of her house, which now has no roof, walls or windows.
Little by little, details of damages caused by Hurricane Irma during its passage through Cuba are emerging. It’s a tragedy.

WNU Editor: Growing up in the Soviet Union no one relied on the government when emergencies/disasters happened. And for those who still had faith .... Chernobyl was the last straw. I am surprised that some of the people of Cuba still have faith that the government would help them .... my prediction .... they are going to wait a long time for that help to arrive.

I was a kid living in one of the parts of the UK where the caesium-137 came down in rainfall. We were pretty badly hit. It wasn't until 2012 that all the farms in my area could freely sell meat or milk, because it was too radioactive until that point.
The Soviet government was loath to admit to the scale of the disaster, although it evacuated Pripyat within 48 hrs, which is vastly better than the Japanese response to Fukushima. At any rate, the USSR didn't tell international bodies about the accident for several days, and didn't admit to a crisis for several more days.
The week of the disaster, before we knew about the radiation, I spent much of my time outdoors, and I went swimming in a local lake a lot. I wasn't bothered by the Spring rain showers.
A few years later, my immune system just upped and failed. It went haywire, with my white blood cell count falling to basically non-existent levels. Doctors said I might die. They didn't know what was wrong, and couldn't find a cause for my symptoms. The effects of radiation poisoning, I guess. My mother now has a pre-cancerous condition. Lots of my family members have died of cancer, despite being non-smokers.
Anon,
I have my share of stories too. It seems that every child born in the Soviet Union at that time (and five years later) have developed a medical issue.
