Wall Street Journal: Russia Targets NATO Soldier Smartphones, Western Officials Say

Moscow seeks information on operations and troop strength, according to officials with NATO countries.

Russia has opened a new battlefront with NATO, according to Western military officials, by exploiting a point of vulnerability for almost all allied soldiers: their personal smartphones.

Troops, officers and government officials of North Atlantic Treaty Organization member countries said Russia has carried out a campaign to compromise soldiers’ smartphones. The aim, they say, is to gain operational information, gauge troop strength and intimidate soldiers.

The Russian Defense Ministry didn’t respond to a request for comment. Russian officials deny that Moscow stages such attacks.

WNU Editor: Russia's ability to jam cell phone transmissions is nothing new .... The Ukraine Army Cannot Counter Russian Jamming Technology (Match 8, 2015). The technology to track, intercept, and even sending out false messages is also nothing new, but this is the first time that I am reading that is claiming that Russia is targeting NATO forces and officials. Am I surprised no .... we are living in an age where everything is under surveillance 24/7.

Update: This is interesting .... NATO armies to use new gear – IED jammers and mobile phone interception systems (iHLS).

Fancy Bear is alledged to have hacked an android app, developed by the Ukraine Military, to give a handheld ballistic computers to their artillary, via smart phone.

Russia used the hack to backdoor the locations of the Ukrainian artillary for counter battery fire.

Intel Agencies already use tons of open source intel from social media. We know that the NSA can remotely turn a phone on, ( mic, camera, gps, etc), and Wikileaks very kindly let loose some of those exploits into "the wild",
