Washington Post: FBI agents seeking motive meet Las Vegas gunman's girlfriend Marilou Danley, as she arrives back in U.S.
Authorities investigating the Las Vegas massacre turned Wednesday to the shooter’s girlfriend, hoping for more answers about the gunman and what may have sparked the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.
Investigators have spent the days since Sunday’s attack — which killed 58 people and injured hundreds more — struggling to explain why 64-year-old Stephen Paddock holed up in a high-rise hotel overlooking the Las Vegas Strip and opened fire on concertgoers at a country music festival far below.

What I can't understand is how he was able to amass such an arsenal without attracting the attention of the relevant authorities. Surely, some one buying that many weapons, most of which were assault-type rifles, would set off some alarms somewhere.
Nope,
Only multiple hand gun purchases at the same time, same place, in some States, draw "extra" attention.

By Federal law, US gun records cannot be searchable by owner, or in any kind of computer database. Instead, BATF have to "trace" a gun used in a crime, by make, model, serial number, from the manufacturer, through to buyer, by searching through paper records or microfilm, or dozens of phone calls.
Even machine gun sales, which are subject to a $200 tax and Local law enforcement approval, had from 2004 to 2012, a loophole.
A Gun buyer would set up a "Trust", a LLC, the LLC would buy the machine gun, $200 tax paid, no checks needed, no approvals needed. Often the machine guns bought, were "reimported" from offshore.
That's how the number of legally owned machine guns went from 348,596 in 2003, to 687,566 by the time the loophole was closed.
Only 22% of American residents own guns, but all told, they own 345,658,000+ guns.
Funny thing is 3% of American resident's, called by the NRA "Super Users", own 178,458,000+ of those guns, a bit over 50% of all the legally owned guns in the US.
Look up gun laws in Nevada and you will understand. Almost no laws whatsoever for guns and their use in Nevada...as lax as any other state in the nation
The truck attack in France killed more people.
Paddock could have kamikazied with one of his planes and killed more people.
