Bloomberg: Korea War Seen Killing Up to 300,000 Even Without Nukes

* Up to 25 million on both sides of border could be affected
* Grim assessment offered by Congressional Research Service

Renewed conflict on the Korean peninsula could kill hundreds of thousands of people in the first few days alone even if no nuclear weapons are involved, according to a new report by the Congressional Research Service.

Given population densities on the peninsula, military conflict “could affect upwards of 25 million people on either side of the border, including at least 100,000 U.S. citizens,” according to a 62-page assessment sent to U.S. lawmakers Friday and obtained by Bloomberg News.

The grim report comes after tensions between the U.S. and North Korea peaked over accelerated missile and nuclear weapons tests by Kim Jong Un’s regime, exacerbated by a war of words between Kim and President Donald Trump. Earlier Friday, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis visited the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, saying the U.S. is continuing to pursuing diplomacy as the preferred choice to resolve the crisis.

WNU Editor: I think the number is high for the first week .... people know how to instinctively scramble away from danger when it approaches. But the longer that conflicts go on, the higher the death toll .... and if everyone else gets involved .... the numbers become astronomical.

That number is incredibly low. NK has chemical warheads on their artillery, the only conceivable way the casualties would be so low is in a preemptive strike disabling 80% of NK's artillery. In such a case NK would unleash anything and everything at their disposal. I would argue over a million would die in the first hour, within a week NK would be striking American cities with nuclear or chemical warheads.

This assumes that the North Koreans have adequate training, maintenance, and fresh ammunition for their artillery. I doubt that's the case.

I agree ,that scenario is incredibly high all of your points will come into play.
If the u.s conducts a,surgical strike l doubt Kim would vouchers than a limited response for domestic consumption.
He cannot sustain his artillery fire on Seoul AND military targets. Does Kim really want to risk killing hundreds of Chinese nationals in S Korea, knowing the response from China?.
Expect a Chinese orchestrated coup once the shooting starts.

I'd argue under 10,000 dead (ten), and no nukes used or biological weapons used (he is about regime survival not suicidal)

*sigh*

Hard to put accurate numbers on a conflict that could evolve very quickly.

Though I tend to agree with fazman about this possible conflict, the above statement is so true, especially with nukes involved. If no nukes, I think very low with NK loss. Nukes? Who knows? Everyone is kinda now in a corner on this, but I think especially Kim. He really has no place to go, but the real question is; does he care?
