Daily Mail: Catalonia's post-dated declaration of independence: Separatist leader and MPs sign breakaway document – but say it won't be implemented yet

* President of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont, told the Catalan parliament he has a mandate for independence
* But he said he will wait 'a few weeks' and ask the Spanish government for a mandate during negotiations
* The president and MPs also signed a declaration of independence but stressed it will not be implemented yet
* Spain rejected Catalonia's 'tacit' independence declaration, according to a spokesman for the government
* Puigdemont said Catalans are not 'criminals' or 'crazy', but 'people who want to vote' after the referendum
* The president also said Catalans have 'nothing against Spain and the Spanish people' after voting to secede
* Spanish government has warned the region not to do anything 'irreversible' as the nation deals with the crisis

Catalan president Carles Puigdemont said tonight he has a mandate to declare Catalonia an independent country during a speech to the regional parliament - but stopped short of actually doing so.

The Catalan president said that millions of Catalan citizens believe the region should have its own state in his highly anticipated speech, explaining that the region had won the right to be an independent republic.

But he refused to declare unilateral independence immediately and instead called for negotiations over a period of 'a few weeks' to end the region's 'conflict' with Spain.
