The Guardian: After the liberation of Mosul, an orgy of killing

In the dying days of the battle of Mosul, Ghaith Abdul-Ahad followed Iraqi soldiers during the last push against Isis. But following their victory, a new wave of savagery was unleashed

One hot and sticky evening in July, in the dying days of the battle for Mosul, a group of Iraqi army officers sat for dinner in a requisitioned civilian house not far from the ruins of the mosque where, three years earlier, the leader of Islamic State had announced the creation of a new caliphate.

At the head of the table sat the commander, large and burly, flanked by his two majors. The rest of the officers were seated according to rank, with the youngest officers placed at the far end. The commander, who was trying to lose weight, had banned his cook from serving meat at mealtimes, but tonight was a special occasion. The day before, his unit had liberated another block of streets in the Old City without suffering any casualties.

The alternatives:

Let ISIS remains in power and kill more Americans?

Send 3 marine divisions to retake the city for Iraq?

I am not complaining. If you support ISIS I do not care what happens to you.

Anon,

Imagine you are a you Sunni boy or man. The government of Iraq is corrupt and prejudicial. The economy sucks. You have raised not raised a fist nor fired a gun.

These guys swing into town and rout the army, which was part ghost army commanded by politically faithful cronies of the Shia leader.

You might stay in your hometown and stick around for awhile.

Then after that it is too late. There are war zones to the south east and west. Escape over mountains controlled by Kurds to an uncertain future?

I have some sympathy (maybe not a lot, but some) for the residents of Mosul, for the foreigners, who traveled there none.

Of course you should have sympathy for the innocent. No one should be killed in error or on suspicion. Those are war crimes - even if they were fighting against isis and were mad as hell. Did you read about what they did to the older gentleman in the story? Imagine he was innocent. .not unlikely. They tortured and then killed him after he refused to agree to their accusations. Their justification: "if he was innocent his blood will be purged and he'll go to heaven"..wtf.. Do not accept these behaviors!! That's not justice. That's straight up murder and torture.

We swedish men are not famous for our compassion. Our government has made us extremly cynical with its' immigration policy.

Anon..I've never heard anything bad about Swedes. I did hear about your immigration issues though (mostly by swedes complaining about their government policies. .seems to be really bad over there at the moment)
