Top US Nuclear Commander: If President Trump Ordered A Nuclear Attack That He Disagreed With He Would Refuse

CBS: Top general says he would resist "illegal" nuke order from Trump

The top U.S. nuclear commander said Saturday he would push back against President Trump if he ordered a nuclear launch the general believed to be "illegal," saying he would hope to find another solution.

Air Force Gen. John Hyten, commander of the U.S. Strategic Command (STRATCOM), told an audience at the Halifax International Security Forum in Halifax, Nova Scotia, on Saturday that he has given a lot of thought to what he would say if a president ordered a strike he considered unlawful.

"I think some people think we're stupid," Hyten said in response to a question about such a scenario. "We're not stupid people. We think about these things a lot. When you have this responsibility, how do you not think about it?"

Hyten explained the process that would follow such a command. As head of STRATCOM, Hyten is responsible for overseeing the U.S. nuclear arsenal.

WNU Editor: We are going down a very slippery slop with this. And while I can understand why this issue is important to Air Force Gen. John Hyten .... when it comes to the use of nuclear weapons .... I believe it is not up to a General (or Generals) to decide these things. Because what would happen on the flip side if the President decides to not launch a nuclear strike .... but his Generals believe it is the lawful thing to do. I can think of a few scenarios where this can come into play .... because after all .... these Generals and Admirals swore an oath to protect defend the constitution of the United States, and my gut is telling me that they will be responding independently from what the U.S. President may wish in a nuclear conflict.

What you say is true about the military. On the other hand, is it up to this or that officer to decide what is and is not an unlawful order?Gen McArthur decided on a course of action contrary to what Pres. Truman wanted and so Truman had him relieved of his command. The president, of course, is the commander-in-chief. That means or implies he outranks any military officer.

The US has a "Nuclear Policy and Posture".

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_Posture_Review

It lays out the who, what, how, when and where nuclear weapons can be used.

Any order by a POTUS for a nuclear strike, say against California, that's "outside" the Nuclear Posture, would be refused as an illegal order.

There have been occasions in the past, both on the US and the Russian sides, where launch orders have been ignored by the person closest to the scene and the launch button.

Jay,

]"Any order by a POTUS for a nuclear strike, say against California"

It is more likely that some political of the Weathermen would launch a Aum Shinrikyo style attack.

Fred,
Has it right.

Bob Huntley,
He has something in mind or he is remembering a TV trope as being history.

Rogue elements from the USSR did launch on the U.S. (Red Star Rogue).

@wnu, I understand where you're coming from, but as others have pointed out - and as history taught us (see Nazi Germany), it is not only important that illegal and (!) Immoral orders are rejected, but it is crucial to our society and the world as a whole. Just think about the Russian sub officer who prevented a nuclear war -because- he didn't blindly follow orders. We all - you, I, everyone would not be born or would have died if not for him/not for stopping such an action. In today's world of automation it is especially important that man gets to think about the legality, but more important the morality of orders.

And Trump should really be treated differently. He is president, but he is also a highly immoral man. If you doubt that, that's your right. But I pray for the integrity and strength of soldiers and commanders on all sides to question such orders. Equally, if Trump were to give such orders and there's a credible threat to the nation, his command should be followed swiftly. Trump created this problem, hence why I think he should be impeached because he puts the nation and the world in greater risk than necessary. But that's just my opinion and preference... I'd be OK with him staying president, but I'd never be OK with any soldier following orders of a morally corrupt commander blindly.

Here is my understanding

"How's that G8 Jet Wax Deduction gonna work out for you?"

1) "The change appears to be similar to a bill offered by Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio and cosponsored by GOP Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio."

2) Jay is mentally ill.

3) Private jets are great. I flew on one once for a business trip. We did in 6 to 8 hours what would have been an overnight trip and a hassle. No hotel & no TSA line.

This was part of the tax bill was not on my agenda, but it is now since it is a political football. All the Kamal Harris's, Sherrod's and Jay's of the world will go full tard. Hatch and Sherrod had an exchange of words. Hatch slapped down the rich but class baiting Sherrod. Still Sherrod has not learned a thing. An Ohio business goes to him and so he submits a bill on private jets, then he turns around and plays class warfare.

S.321 - A bill to amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to exempt amounts paid for aircraft management services from the excise taxes imposed on transportation by air.

"And Trump should really be treated differently. He is president, but he is also a highly immoral man"

More immoral than Ted Kennedy?

Has Trump committed manslaughter, negligent homicide or murder like Ted Kennedy?

What will you say to May Kopechne? If you do not believe in heaven what would you say to her relatives?

More immoral than Senator Chris Dodd and Ted Kennedy who assaulted a waitress at the La Brasserie restaurant?

Do you like “waitress sandwich”es?

More immoral than Bill Clinton, who raped Anita Broderick? Careful now, The official party line has changed. Now that Bill no longer has political power, they believe Anita.

More immoral than LBJ?

Anon,

There was a new plenum session at the 'Ministry of Love' and your side has new marching orders on immorality. You are to about-face and then hustle double time back to sanity.
