Wall Street Journal: Japan Is Building Missile Bases to Confront Rising Threat From China

Tokyo rethinks approach of strict pacifism, plans new military installations on southwestern islands.

ISHIGAKI, Japan—Japan’s military is laying the groundwork for batteries of antiship and antiaircraft missiles in a quiet, sugar-cane-filled valley here, as it girds to confront what Tokyo views as its greatest long-term threat: China.

Ishigaki is one of a string of subtropical islands in the far southwest of the Japanese archipelago—the closest is about 200 miles from China’s coast—that defense officials are fortifying with troop garrisons, new weapons and a radar installation.

As China becomes more powerful and assertive and North Korea builds up its nuclear arsenal, Japan is rethinking its approach to defense and moving away from the policies of strict pacifism it has followed since its defeat in World War II.

Oh China, when will you learn? Now you're literally being encircled. Couple years ago you complained about nothing. Then you did many, many stupid mistakes, stole, threatened and intimidated your neighbours and now it's actually happening. You're really being encircled, because countries around you see you for what you are and what you did. Good luck.

Anonymous,

You may be right. China seems to me to be like a poker player who had a fabulous hand and overplayed it.

"...argued the country should reduce its dependence on the US military..." This is so true and I have been waiting a LONG, LONG time for leaders on both sides to finally realize this. Once Japan is separated from the US military they will be much freer to act against China, will be a much more effective fighting force, and will be much better able to represent their interests. This will also have the effect of making Japan a more reliable "ally." This would be a win/win all the around for both countries. It's long past time this happened and besides it would enable America to more properly deploy its forces in ways that make sense for it.

Great, thanks Chinsee government! Japan was a pacifist country for decades. Did you really have to bully them so long they turn militaristic again? So smart of you China's party lol
If anyone here still thinks China party has a 1000year plan they should remind themselves of what happened to Germany's 1000year plan lol
And if anyone ever says again China is smart and they think long term ..double lol...we have seen opposite after opposite for years now.

It should become apparent that China, figuratively speaking, is a 2,000 year old child that still hasn't grown up ..it's becoming pathetic quickly and China despite all the money it stole and all the money out throws around and all the intimidation it does, is just becoming the isolated bully on the play ground

And guess what, china..people want freedom and justice more than they want plastic toys. You don't have what we desire. Once your growth ebbs further - all estimations say in less than 10 years - what will you have to show for? Where's the empire? All lost over a few rocky islands. Like a child you got played because you couldn't prioritise. Let the grown ups play, OK?
