BBC: Macron tells Erdogan: No chance of Turkey joining EU
French President Emmanuel Macron has told his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, that there is no chance of progress towards Turkey joining the European Union at present.
At a joint news conference in Paris, Mr Macron said there were differences over human rights since Turkey's purges following a failed coup in 2016.
Mr Erdogan said Turkey was tired of constantly imploring to join the EU.
He lashed out at a journalist who asked about claims Turkey sent arms to Syria.
The journalist had asked him about a story in Cumhuriyet newspaper from 2015 which suggested that Turkish intelligence had sent the supplies.
Mr Erdogan responded by accusing the journalist of talking like a member of the Gulenist movement, which he blames for the 2016 coup.
"When you ask your questions, be careful on this point. And do not speak with the words of another," he said.

French President Macron's suggestion that an EU-Turkey partnership be established instead falls short of what he wants .... My prediction .... as long as President Erdogan stays in power, there will be little if any progress in EU - Turkish relations.

Turkey is not a secular-Muslim nation, so it would be stupid for the EU to admit it.
It is stupid to join the EU anyway.
The Eurocrats do not make the merest pretense of a homage ceremony.
"It is stupid to join the EU anyway." Very true. Why join a doomed entity? BREXIT is only the beginning. Now we have Catalonia. Others will clamor for the exits.
The only way it can be kept together will be through the use of brute force. We should not be a part of this.
Speaking of Catalonia the US/"west" has sanctioned and even invaded countries for doing far less than what the Spanish government has done to Catalonia. Should we sanction Spain? Should we invade Spain on behalf of Catalonia? Should we sanction ourselves for our hypocrisy? Should we invade ourselves for our hypocrisy?
I suggest none of the above. Admit that we are more interested in representing our interests than promoting the holy grail of "democracy." Otherwise SIT DOWN AND STFU!!
In other words, behave like a normal country. Normal countries and normal people do not pursue ideologies. They pursue the best interests of themselves and their families within ethical boundaries of course. People who do otherwise are mentally ill and need assistance.
Now should "western" nations form any kind of union with Turkey" I would say no as the cultures and values are not compatible. The only reason Turkey would have for forming such a union would be as a "Trojan Horse" to take over an conquer. As for trade, this may be possible. Also, limited interactions where mutual interests are at stake will likely occur. As for a union, not a good idea for the "west." The French leader by his statement on this proves the old saying that broken clocks are right twice a day.
