CNN: Trump tells Seoul he's open to talks with North Korea

Washington (CNN)President Donald Trump expressed openness to holding talks between the United States and North Korea during a call with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on Wednesday, the latest of Trump's forays into inter-Korean relations.

The call comes a day after representatives from North and South Korea held day-long negotiations in the demilitarized zone, where Pyongyang agreed to send a delegation to next month's Winter Olympics and to hold talks with Seoul to ease military tensions.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement that Moon briefed Trump on the "outcomes of the discussions between North and South Korea" and Moon "thanked President Trump for his influential leadership in making the talks possible."

WNU Editor: The source for this discussion is coming from the South Korean President's office. Just an impression .... but it looks like South Korean President Moon Jae-in is realizing the fact that North Korea may show up at the Olympics, but on the big issues .... nuclear weapons, missiles, etc.. .... the North is not interested in dealing with him. Bottom line .... the North Koreans want to only deal with President Trump.

Ultimately South Korea is going to have to sign off on any agreement. Mr. Trump may be able to act as an intermediary of sorts.

Dealing with Mr. Trump may work well for America. At least this way we are in the loop on all decisions that North or South Korea might make in real time. This will help us to be able to properly calibrate our polices in real time as opposed to learning later about what the parties are doing then having to adjust or worse having to guess what the parties are doing.

Perhaps coming is an "outsider" the parties may see Trump as an "honest broker" but eventually Kim and the North Koreans are going to have to deal with South Korea as no final agreements are going to be able to reached on pretty much anything without their consent.

Another possibility is he wants to separate DJT and America from South Korea. With tougher sanctions looming and support from China and Russia somewhat tepid perhaps he believes that by making peace with America this can be changed. Then he will approach peace with South Korea, reunification of the Korean peninsula, or whatever he wants to do with regards to South Korea as part of separate track.
