Chinese President Xi Jinping wants to transform China’s military into the world’s most powerful force by 2050. And he could be on track to do it.
On the opening day of its National People’s Congress in Beijing yesterday, China reported a defence budget of ¥1.11 trillion ($A225 billion) for 2018. That represents an 8.1% increase in its defence budget, compared to a 7% increase last year.
China’s military has modernised rapidly in recent years. Since January alone it has demonstrated new capabilities in stealth fighter jets, drones, naval ships and advanced missiles.
Chinese scientists are also working to develop revolutionary technologies that would change the way wars are fought – and the way we live.

WNU Editor: The Chinese have the manpower, many highly educated engineers/scientists/etc., the resources .... and more importantly .... the will power and desire to be the world's super-power. And while I do not know if they will accomplish their goal for techno-military supremacy .... they are definitely determined to make a go at it.

The world's top military power by 2050? Why so long? They may already be the world's top military power today or the second most powerful military. We cannot "know" the outcome of a war in advance. If the US is considered the main potential adversary, they are already more than capable of challenging the US and defeating the US in the South China Sea and likely pretty much anywhere else in the world where a conflict might occur.
"...they are definitely determined to make a go at it." If so, they could learn something from the experience of the US. The US has been considered the top military power for quite awhile even a "super power." This has come at enormous cost for the US combined with little to no corresponding benefit. Furthermore, while the financial costs have been enormous, the costs have not been limited to mere financial ones.
Most Americans, at least when they are not struggling just to survive and have the time to focus on it, would much rather have a foreign policy similar to that of Canada or Australia. In other words, being the so called "super power" may not be what it's cracked up to be!!
They are first thieves, if you take a gander at their "military" equipment it looks a lot like either the US or Russian equipment. Very little is homegrown, the reverse engineer and steal everything not nailed down. I am not impressed.

This will be a question that I am wondering about. Can they actually invent anything on their own? If they are going to be the world leader in military technology or anything else, they will likely actually need to invent something on their own.
As expert reverse engineers, they can take the product someone else produced, copy it, and improve upon it making it better than the original, however, without a "product" to reverse engineer the expert reverse engineer would be pretty much stuck. As such, to be the world leader in military technology over the long term they will need to solve this problem.
As of right now, I am not overly impressed with their long range prospects but we shall see. In the current situation, with their network of alliances they are more than capable of challenging the United States and winning in a conventional fight. Given the dire financial situation of America, the decaying infrastructure that needs to be upgraded, a military that has essentially been ground to powder in a series of fruitless foreign interventions that make/made absolutely no sense, and the lack of resources to seriously address any of this America's long range prospects are likely not much better.
As of right now, the best description of our country is "Potemkin Village." This can be reversed but it will take leadership who can and are willing to face up to reality.
Looking at the picture of that "rail gun", why would you plop a big gun like that right up on the bow of the ship? Something seems amiss, like a photo-op just to get people talking, or is it actually on the dock but made to look like it's on the ship? I'd like to see that thing dig it's bow out on the high seas!
