Newsweek: Putin: Russia Would Retaliate If Hit by a Nuclear Attack, Even If It Led to 'Global Catastrophe'

President Vladimir Putin has warned that he would not hesitate to strike back if Russia was hit by a nuclear adversary, even if it led to a “global catastrophe.”

The Russian leader spoke to one of his country’s most infamous pro-Kremlin TV show hosts, in a tough-talking interview broadcast on national airwaves before Russians go to the polls later this month.

Although no major rivals are permitted on the ballot and Putin is likely to be re-elected, recent votes in Russia have slumped to record low turnouts. The leader has recently made several headline-grabbing statements to present himself as the bulwark against foreign attacks, as he campaigns on the platform of being a “strong president” who will ensure a “strong Russia.”

This is just typical Russian bravado that he is showing by stating the obvious as the Russians head to the polls.

"tweet endless and brag, change positions." As the situation changes, positions have to be changed at times. As DJT pointed out in one of the debates in a back and forth between himself and Ted Cruz I think if a policy or approach isn't working you change it. Perhaps you even "flip flop" as some might call it.

Who in the Administration is "bragging?" Perhaps I missed it. Perhaps calling someone out "speaking truth to power" may be construed by some as bragging. Now with that said many do seem to be bragging about how they are going to bring POTUS down. Maybe this is the bragging to which you are referring.

As to the tweeting, there may well be pros and cons to it, however, it does offer a medium and a means to circumvent the media and get a message out directly to the American people and to the world.

"talk crap endlessly=North Korea." I think you underestimate them, a very dangerous approach.

Regarding China, generally this seems to be the case, however, of late they seem to be quite noisy. Now if those in the region have territorial claims that they feel are threatened they need to FIGHT FOR THEM and LEAVE US OUT OF IT!!

"Strut athletically and bluster=Russia." Mr. Putin as an ex KGB is no doubt a very good athlete. In his photos he appears to be so. As such, it is generally not wrong to draw attention to a positive feature that one has. As for the "bluster," I think you misread. He is explaining what will happen to anyone who tries to mess with Russia or its interests and should be taken seriously. As I have stated, respect them, treat them as equals which they generally are, do not provoke them unnecessarily, and good outcomes can be achieved. To often our government appears to have gone out of its way to provoke them unnecessarily. We will NOT agree on everything and in some areas we may not be able to reach an accommodation or cooperate but the prescription above would be a good start.

As to Iran, I generally agree with your analysis but would add America to it as Iran continues to threaten America as well.

Fred,

This was kind of ny thought to. We could change the statement to say "American president Trump warns that America would retaliate if hit by a nuclear attack even if it led to a 'global catastrophe'"

This would be the absolute correct thing to say. Adversaries and potential adversaries need to be reminded from time to time of what will happen if they attack us. Of course if Trump made such a statement he'd be viciously attacked by the media for "insulting other countries" or some other ridiculous nonsense.

Of course DJT would never launch such an attack. He is relatively sane compared to the establishment. The people who fabricated the Russian collusion nonsense, not so much. As for HRC and her most dedicated followers, not so much either.

When she began beating that drum during the campaign, I immediately figured out "the woman is not mentally well or she has the mind of a spoiled insolent child." Either way neither she nor her followers should ever be allowed to hold positions of power ever again. Mr, Putin's statement is likely directed at them as unfortunately it is a real possibility such people may regain power.

If they ever do regain power, God help us all. Such mentally unbalanced people would be capable of almost anything. Either they are clinically insane or they are spoiled children in tbe bodies of adults. The rank and file can probably be properly educated. As for the "true believers" they will need to be opposed and stopped by pretty much any means necessary.

What Mr. Putin said was, in effect, if we are attacked by nuclear weapons we are going to respond and the prospect of global catastrophe will not stop us from defending ourselves. Russia and Mr. Putin obviously have the means to respond. It'd be pretty stupid ti attack them.

We would expect a mormal leader of a normal country who has such a means as Russia does to make this point. Why does the media even report on such commonsense obvious things? Apparently they are so desparate to fan the flames of anti-Russian hysteria they will try almost anything.

Of course had Mr. Trump made a similar statement the media would have been beside themselves with breathless anti-Trump hysteria. The true believers would eat this up. The rank and file would do as they are told and dutifully enjoin the media and the leaders in anti-Trump hysteria. Normal Americans of which there are many would be grateful to have a POTUS who actually plans on trying to defend them should they be attacked.
