President Trump Says He Wants To Deploy The Military To The U.S. - Mexico Border

Politico: Trump says he wants military to guard U.S.-Mexico border until wall is built

President Donald Trump said Tuesday he wants the military to deploy troops along the U.S.-Mexico border to protect the nation until a wall is built at the southern border.

"We are going to be guarding our border with our military. That's a big step,” Trump said during a session at the White House with the leaders of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. "We cannot have people flowing into our country illegally, disappearing and, by the way, never showing up for court."

Long overdue. The Dems riles their base with the likes of David Hoggs, Trevyon Martine, Mike Brown and the GOP riles their base with illegals massing on the border.

Anon,

"Long overdue." You are correct here. This is what a military is actually supposed to do, defend the nation. Since resources are limited, this will likely mean a scaling back or elimination of some of the ridiculous missions around the world and ridiculous deployments that not only don't advance American security or economic interests but actually undermine them.

"...the GOP riles their base with illegals massing on the border." I find no evidence of this. We have long been under siege by illegal immigrants. There is no need to rile anyone up about that.

My suggestion would be treat illegal immigrants in the same fashion that a home invasion would be treated and to deal with it in the same fashion. Agreed, though to deploy the military to the southern border is an appropriate step. This way assuming someone is being "riled" over this we can begin to fix the process.

Mexico and the US have a long and bad history. Once we have good fences the healing process can begin. I would suggest have both the wall and the military along the borders. A wall is not going to be perfect. It'd be good to have the military as an additional layer of security.

Any American familiar with our history would know that with an exception back in time we have had very good relations with Mexico...that is why there is so much trade there and so many American firms making things there...want the military there? join up

There is a certain amount of trade. Having the military on the border would not disrupt this in any way shape or form. These are business arrangements and will continue just as before. Perhaps America might be able to get better arrangements. Having the military along the border will improve relations as good fences and good security make good neighbors. Also, it would stop the horde that is invading from stealing our resources and draining our country. I think this is a better use of military assets than in somewhere like Poland.

I wanted to join the military but my eyesight is poor. I would join up for missions that actually enhance our national security and help grow our economy. This would do both.

This would not be the first time the military would be sent to the border, pretty sure Bush did the same thing. Realistically Customs / Immigration doesn’t want anyone one down there “helping out” other than their own agents, it just creates more headaches for them. The biggest draw to the US right now is “sanctuary”, whether it be cities or states it’s whats keeping the border hot! If only our politicians were wise enough to realize the consequences of their good intentions...

Trade? Yeah we give em our jobs and companies and we get cheap unskilled labour in the form of illegal immigrants. Yeah that’s real fair trade eh.

AS: You are largely right. Unfortunately I have to seriously question whether anyone like Mr. Lapides who would suggest that this is somehow "good" for America is really an American. Of course he is and I am not going to question this. It simply means we have a disagreement on the best way forward.

This is a great Idea! The Canadian border as well and the coast line. The drugs that come into Canada from the sea is astonishing, the Canadian government is two weak to do anything.

Anonymous,

Canada would know more about what Canada actually needs to do to defend Canada than myself as an American or any American leader would. If this is a problem, Canada can certainly invest in the Naval assets that would be necessary to do that.

If Canada's border with the US is a problem, then they could certainly deploy the necessary military assets to defend it. Personally I have not heard of many, if any, Canadians coming across the border illegally into the US to stay. In contrast, the US is de facto being invaded from its southern border with Mexico. If a nation can't or won't defend its borders, then it probably will cease to be a nation and probably does not need to be one.

I think Canada and the US have an excellent relationship. Canada is a country that Americans admire. Generally speaking good fences make good neighbors. Perhaps by enhanced border security the Canadian and American relationship can be improved.

Canada's foreign policy is a vast improvement over America's. We should study it and try and implement it. Canadians have a lifestyle and enjoy security that most of the southern cousins in the United States can never hope to have.

"The Posse Comitatus Act is a United States federal law (18 U.S.C. § 1385, original at 20 Stat. 152) signed on June 18, 1878 by President Rutherford B. Hayes. The purpose of the act – in concert with the Insurrection Act of 1807 – is to limit the powers of the federal government in using federal military personnel to enforce domestic policies within the United States. It was passed as an amendment to an army appropriation bill following the end of Reconstruction, and was subsequently updated in 1956 and 1981."
