Mexican protesters have shut a US southern border crossing amid fears that untested American travellers will spread coronavirus.

Residents in Sonora, south of the US state of Arizona, have promised to block traffic into Mexico for a second day after closing a checkpoint for hours on Wednesday.

They wore face masks and held signs telling Americans to "stay at home".

Mexico has fewer than 500 confirmed Covid-19 cases and the US over 65,000.

The border is supposed to be closed to all except "essential" business, but protesters said there has been little enforcement and no testing by authorities.

The blockade was led by members of the group Sonorans for Health and Life, who called for medical testing to be done on anyone who crosses from the US into Mexico.

Washington Post: Smugglers are sawing through new sections of Trump’s border wall

SAN DIEGO — Smuggling gangs in Mexico have repeatedly sawed through new sections of President Trump’s border wall in recent months by using commercially available power tools, opening gaps large enough for people and drug loads to pass through, according to U.S. agents and officials with knowledge of the damage.

The breaches have been made using a popular cordless household tool known as a reciprocating saw that retails at hardware stores for as little as $100. When fitted with specialized blades, the saws can slice through one of the barrier’s steel-and-concrete bollards in a matter of minutes, according to the agents, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the barrier-defeating techniques.

After cutting through the base of a single bollard, smugglers can push the steel out of the way, allowing an adult to fit through the gap. Because the bollards are so tall — and are attached only to a panel at the very top — their length makes them easier to push aside once they have been cut and are left dangling, according to engineers consulted by The Washington Post.

Reuters: Mexico says presidential plane sale to help fund migration plan

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said on Wednesday the sale of the former presidential jet and other aircraft from the last government would help fund efforts to curb migration under a deal struck last week with Washington.

The agreement reached on Friday averted escalating import tariffs of 5% on Mexican goods, which U.S. President Donald Trump had vowed to impose unless Mexico did more to contain migration via Central America to the United States.

In return, Mexico has agreed to toughen up its migration controls, including deploying its National Guard security force to its southern border with Guatemala.

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico and the United States might consider additional steps next month to restrict illegal immigration from Central America, including measures to bind Brazil and Panama into their efforts, Mexico’s foreign minister said on Monday.

Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard said the measures could be needed if a deal announced last week between Washington and Mexico fails to reduce within 45 days the numbers of migrants entering Mexico, mainly from Central America, on their way to the U.S. border.

The deal averted import tariffs on all Mexican goods that President Donald Trump had threatened to impose unless Mexico committed to do more to fight illegal immigration into the United States.

WNU Editor: The media narrative is that this U.S. - Mexico deal is nothing new. That it was decided months ago. Maybe so, but when I did a search on the New York Times/Washington Post/and AP news websites, there was no announcement of such a deal in their news archives. Certainly not in the past 6 months. Fake news anyone?

As for the deal itself. I am personally skeptical that Mexico will deliver on their end of the deal. Mexico has always had a policy that promoted the migration of their citizens to the U.S., and I do not see them changing that overnight. Coupled this with states like California now openly offering free health care to illegal migrants, I certainly do not see this migrant flood stopping anytime soon .... California to become the first state to extend health benefits to some who live in USA illegally (USA Today). My prediction. There are too many parties in Latin America and in the U.S. who do not want to see this flow of cheap and exploited labour to stop anytime soon. I can easily see Mexico dropping the enforcement of their southern borders in a few weeks, and an intensive media and political campaign within the U.S. to block any future measures from the White House to stop it.

WASHINGTON/MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - The United States and Mexico reached a deal on Friday to avert a tariff war, with Mexico pledging to take “strong measures” to contain the migration of mostly Central Americans crossing the southern U.S. border, a surge in recent months that has overwhelmed U.S. resources.

U.S. President Donald Trump, who has continually railed against illegal immigration as a candidate and since taking office, had threatened to impose 5% import tariffs on all Mexican goods from Monday if Mexico did not do more to tighten its borders. Imposing tariffs on Mexico would have left the United States fighting trade wars with two of its three largest trading partners and would further unnerve financial markets already on edge about a global economic slowdown.

Under pressure from Trump, Mexico has launched a crackdown on the Guatemala border, arresting activists and holding migrants.

As Donald Trump’s deadline for new tariffs on Mexican imports draws near, Mexico has stepped up security along its porous border with Guatemala – deploying police and soldiers to its southern frontier and arresting prominent migration activists.

Trump last week pledged to impose 5% tariffs on Mexican products on 10 June unless Mexico stops Central American migrants from traveling through its territory.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mexico on Monday made clear it would reject a U.S. idea to take in all Central American asylum seekers if it is raised at talks this week with Trump administration, which has threatened to impose tariffs if Mexico does not crack down on illegal immigration.

President Donald Trump last week said he will impose tariffs on all Mexican imports from June 10 as a way to pressure Mexico to tackle large flows of mostly Central American migrants passing through on the way to the United States.

The threat was a shock to global markets, which are already suffering from a trade war between the United States and China.

FOX News: Pentagon approves plan to shift $1.5B for wall along US-Mexico border

The Pentagon has approved a plan to spend an additional $1.5 billion to build 80 more miles of wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, a U.S. defense official confirmed to Fox News Friday.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan approved the re-allocation of funds, which were originally earmarked for support of Afghan security forces and other projects, to help pay for the wall along the southern border.

Daily Mail: US military rules are under review after two soldiers surrendered a pistol to Mexican troops on American soil, Pentagon source reveals

* US Northern Command revealed Mexican soldiers took a pistol from the troops
* Two American soldiers were approached by 'five or six' men near Clint, Texas
* Pentagon are now investigating how to avoid similar situations, a source said
* There had been no protocol for the unusual circumstances the men faced

The Pentagon are reviewing military guidance after the disarming of two US soldiers in the Texas border country by Mexican troops, a source revealed.

According to the US Northern Command, 'five or six' armed Mexican soldiers questioned two American troops conducting operations near the border on April 13.

Officials said the Mexicans were armed with rifles and raised their weapons when they saw the US soldiers, before stripping them of Beretta M9 pistol near Clint, Texas.

The Pentagon are carrying out inquiries that 'will help us modify any instructions that we're giving the troops,' a defense source told the Washington Examiner.

WASHINGTON – The Pentagon is preparing options to build barriers on the southern border in the event that President Donald Trump declares a national emergency there, the latest indication such a move is gaining traction within the administration.

"The Department of Defense is reviewing available authorities and funding mechanisms to identify options to enable border barrier construction," said Navy Capt. Bill Speaks, a Pentagon spokesman. "As there has not been such a declaration made, it would be inappropriate to comment further on those efforts."

The confirmation of the preparations comes after Trump on Thursday gave his most explicit warning yet that he was considering a declaration of a national emergency as a way of freeing up funds for a border wall if talks with Democrats fail to yield a deal on his signature issue.

So preparing a number of options so that they can react when the President orders them to build a physical barrier along the border should surprise no one. As to what is my prediction on what is going to happen next. President Trump and his supporters believe that there is a crisis, and will do what is necessary to confront the chaos at the border. Those who do not believe there is a crisis and/or who believe in open borders will use the courts to block any action that the President Trump pushes forward. A judge will be found to block the President's executive action, but U.S. law gives the Executive enormous powers when it comes to national emergencies, and the lower court will eventually be over-ruled by the Superior Court. U.S. border security is going to be enhanced, one way or the other.

President Trump threatened to permanently close the U.S. border with Mexico on Monday, saying he'll take the drastic action if members of a swelling migrant caravan are not deported back to their Central American homelands.

US Border Patrol shot tear gas and rubber bullets at a group of migrants, including toddlers, as members of the caravan tried to storm the border.

Children were screaming and coughing in the mayhem at the San Ysidro Port of Entry when American agents tried to push the surging Central Americans back.

They started to use crowd control on Sunday afternoon when migrants tried to cut a hole in the concertina wire gap on the Mexican side of the fence.
