Euronews: Poland’s €1.7 billion bid for permanent US base to combat ‘Russian interference’
Poland wants the US to establish a permanent base within its borders to combat "increasing Russian interference", it has emerged.
A proposal by the country’s defence ministry, obtained by Polish media, reveals Warsaw is willing to pay up to $2 billion (€1.7 bn) to help make it happen.
There are already US forces in Poland on a rotational basis but recent Russian actions mean a permanent presence is now necessary, according to the document.
A spokesman for the Kremlin said the “gradual expansion of NATO military structures towards our borders” would not improve security or stability.

Remember when that plane with almost the entire Polish top government on board went down a few years ago? Putin remembers. The Polish remember. There's no love for Russia in Poland. the Americans are very welcome.
As an American it’s promsing to find a major NATO state recognizing a common threat and willing to do whatever it takes to address it. This contrasts with all other major NATO members. Poland is a 3 Seas member so I expect other of those nations to step forth with their own proposals for a deeper American presence. With Germany walking at a trot to deeper energy dependence upon Russia, this Polish action is to be seen as an insurance policy for a NATO default. Germany has no plans to spend the NATO minimums so it obviously can’t aid Poland or other 3 Seas states should Russia threaten them over the next 10 years. This Polish move is a huge deal highlighting NATO weakness, Real Politik at its finest.
Trump might be game to engage with the Poland and should he, it will also include a big energy deal for American energy supplies.
Anon,
"As an American..." I'm an American as well. I fond it intersting how we can all evaluate the same things at the same time yet come to different conclusions. As an American, my first question is "why do we need to place American lives in peril to serve as Poland's b!tch boy in their conflict with Russia?" Maybe I miss something. In any event, before undertaking this the case needs to be made before the American people.
Then we have the problem of Donald Tusk. During a 2007 speech it seemed to me he was very condescending toward then president Bush. Now recently he has all but referred to an American POTUS as his enemy thereby referring to those who voted for him as an enemy. Alienating a country and a people who have sacrificed so much for you while asking so little in return doesn't seem to me to ge very smart business. He is and has been a prominent Polish official. There will, at a minimum, need to be a formal apology from the Polish government and a reprimand of Mr. Tusk for these actions. At this point, they have some nerve asking us for this.
Maybe this needs to be done. If so, explain it thoroughly to the American people. At this point, I don't think they can.
You're as American as a Russian bear drinking vodka and playing with his babushka
