The Hill: Pompeo signs defense pact in Poland

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday rounded out his four-nation tour of Europe, signing a new defense pact in Poland that will increase the number of U.S. troops stationed in the Eastern European country.

"Today, my Administration signed a historic Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement with the Republic of Poland," President Trump said in a statement released by the White House. "This agreement is the culmination of months of negotiations with our Polish allies following the two joint declarations I signed with President Duda last year."

Trump added that the increased American military presence in Poland will "further strengthen NATO deterrence, bolster European security, and help ensure democracy, freedom, and sovereignty."

Breaking Defense: Poland Wraps Deal For Permanent US Troops, Drones, Special Ops

Poland is excited to have more US troops on the way, but military leaders warned this week that the effort to move 12,000 US troops out of Germany will take months for the planning along.

WASHINGTON: The United States will station a permanent garrison of troops in Poland, according to an agreement reached today between Washington and Warsaw. The announcement of the pact came just days after the Pentagon announced it was pulling 12,00 troops out of Germany.

It’s not clear how long it will take to implement the growth of the US footprint in Poland from the current 4,000 troops to 5,500. But the move will require some heavy logistical lifting, including new facilities for US drones, helicopters, an armored brigade combat team, and special operations forces.

Details remain scarce, but the Polish government has long pushed for a larger American footprint, and the Trump administration’s frustration over Germany’s failure to reach NATO-suggested funding goals has forced the Pentagon to look elsewhere for basing options.

  * The flight, part of a Bomber Task Force, shows that the BONEs continue to operate all over the world.

Early in the morning on May 11, 2020, a US B-1B Lancer flew over Warsaw, escorted by the Polish Air Force MiG-29 Fulcrum and F-16 Block 52+ aircraft.

According to the official information released by the Polish MoD, the jet entered the Polish airspace at 7:25 AM. The MoD has released some visual materials though, claiming that the operation took place within the framework of the Bomber Task Force initiative.

Zero Hedge: Poland And US Agree On Locations For New American Troops

Poland and the United States have agreed on six locations for new US troops to be stationed throughout the European nation, according to a Friday statement by Polish Defence Minister Mariusz Blaszczak.

The military deal, signed in June, will add 1,000 non-permanent US troops to the currently stationed 4,500 on rotation as part of NATO forces.

Defense One: US to Send 1,000 More Troops to Poland

Last fall, Warsaw asked for a tank division. Looks like they're getting rotating logistics troops instead.

The United States will add 1,000 troops to the 4,000 already deployed in Poland, a defense official said Tuesday.

Speaking not for attribution a day ahead of an anticipated formal announcement, the official said the added troops would have logistical, not combat, duties.

The announcement is expected when Polish President Andrzej Duda meets with U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday in Washington.

Poland has a history of being caught in the crossfire. It happened during the world wars between global powers. It happened again during the decades of the Cold War. And today's era of continually rising tensions between the United States and Russia is no exception, as new developments point to the skies over Eastern Europe as a new tripwire for WWIII.

The biggest news came today, when senior Pentagon leadership revealed progress in a plan to build an American airbase in Poland. State Department negotiators are still working out the details, but Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Kathryn Wheelbarger said a basing agreement is on the horizon. “We’re looking at probably six months to a year,” she said.

But that’s not all: Polish President Andrzej Duda suggested only half-jokingly earlier this month at the White House that the complex should be named “Fort Trump.”

Bypassing the Pentagon and its allies in NATO, Poland is making a naked appeal directly to the man who could seal the deal. WNU Editor: Poland has a long history of being invaded form the east and west, so I can understand why many Poles view a major U.S. base within their country as a long-term security guarantee. I can also understand German and Russian concerns. For Germany .... the U.S. may shift some assets from their German bases to Poland. For Russia, it means a closer U.S. military presence to their borders. My prediction .... this U.S. base is going to be built, but it will not house the numbers and equipment that many in Germany and russia are worried about.

Polish President Andrzej Duda urged President Donald Trump on Tuesday during a joint news conference to deploy more US troops and military equipment to Poland, even suggesting the US establish a permanent military base and name it "Fort Trump."

"I invite you to post more American military troops in Poland," Duda said, calling a US presence a "guarantor of security."

Duda suggested building a permanent US base in Poland and said he would name it "Fort Trump."

"I firmly believe that this is possible," Duda said, saying it would be both in US and Polish interests.

Euronews: Poland’s €1.7 billion bid for permanent US base to combat ‘Russian interference’

Poland wants the US to establish a permanent base within its borders to combat "increasing Russian interference", it has emerged.

A proposal by the country’s defence ministry, obtained by Polish media, reveals Warsaw is willing to pay up to $2 billion (€1.7 bn) to help make it happen.

There are already US forces in Poland on a rotational basis but recent Russian actions mean a permanent presence is now necessary, according to the document.

A spokesman for the Kremlin said the “gradual expansion of NATO military structures towards our borders” would not improve security or stability.

Poland Shocked By The High Sticker Price For The American Patriot Defense System

Defense News: Poland has sticker shock over ’unacceptable’ price tag for Patriot buy

WASHINGTON — Poland has been pushing toward a purchase of a medium-range air-and-missile defense system for many years, settling on an unprecedented configuration of the Patriot system, but was surprised by the high price tag presented when the U.S. State Department cleared the sale of half of the Patriots Poland plans to buy.

According to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency, when it notified Congress last month of the potential sale, the deal could cost the country $10.5 billion for four systems — that is roughly 37 billion zloties — which already exceeds by 7 billion zloties what Poland has said it would spend on the entire program.

The DSCA announcement only marks the progress in the first phase of the acquisition. Poland would like to see a second round of Patriot systems with a 360-degree detection capability and the first four retrofitted with the new radar in a subsequent deal.

(Reuters) - The U.S. State Department approved a possible $10.5 billion sale of Raytheon Co’s (RTN.N) Patriot missile defense system to Poland, the Pentagon said on Friday.

NATO member Poland has sped up efforts to overhaul its military following Russia’s annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea peninsula in 2014 and in response to Moscow’s renewed military and political assertiveness in the region.

Defense Minister Antoni Macierewicz said in March that Poland expected to sign a deal with Raytheon to buy the Patriot missile defense system by the end of the year.

Patriot missile defense interceptors are designed to detect, track and engage unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), cruise missiles and short-range or tactical ballistic missiles.

US army vehicles and soldiers in camouflage crossed into south-western Poland on Thursday morning from Germany and were heading for Zagan, where they will be based.

A Polish newspaper Sunday released an excerpt of a secretly recorded conversation between Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and former Finance Minister Jacek Rostowski in which Sikorski said Poland's security relationship with the United States was "worth nothing" and gave Warsaw a "false sense of security."

The news weekly Wprost said the conversation was recorded earlier this year at the Amber Room, an elegant Warsaw restaurant. The paper plans to publish the full transcript Monday.

"You know that Polish-American alliance is worth nothing. It is even harmful, because Poland creates a false sense of security," Sikorski is quoted as saying. Rostowski asks why and Sikorski is heard responding: "Complete (expletive). We'll get in conflict with the Germans, Russians and we'll think that everything is super, because we gave the Americans a blow job. Losers. Complete losers."

My Comment: The Polish foreign minister is only voicing what many others have been saying for the past few years .... eastern Europe is no longer a priority in Washington. As to what is my own opinion .... the U.S. attempt to reset it's relationship with Russia coupled with President Obama's decision to cancel an anti-missile defense system deployment to Poland (in his first term) was a heads up for everyone in the region that the alliance that has been in place since the fall of the Berlin Wall was changing. The crisis in Ukraine and the mediocre U.S. response to it has only validated this perception.

U.S. Stations First Permanent Military Unit In Poland -- New York Times/Reuters

LASK, Poland (Reuters) - The United States launched its first permanent military presence on Polish soil on Friday, an air force detachment to service warplanes, in a move long sought by its NATO ally Warsaw.

President Barack Obama announced plans to station air force personnel at Lask air base near Lodz, central Poland, during a visit last year after Warsaw pressed for what it sees as a security guarantee in the face of a more assertive Russia.

From next year, the 10 resident U.S. staff will service four annual aircraft rotations, mainly of F-16 fighter jets and C-130 Hercules transport planes. Up to 200 uniformed personnel and civilian contractors will also be temporarily on the base.

The Polish president has accused Barack Obama of betraying Poland by cancelling a promised missile defence system.

Reflecting Warsaw's long-standing anger over the 2009 cancellation of a controversial Bush-era anti-ballistic missile system President Bronislaw Komorowski said Poland should build its own missile shield to ensure national defence.

"Our mistake was that by accepting the American offer of a shield we failed to take into account the political risk associated with a change of president," said Mr Komorowski in a magazine interview. "We paid a high political price. We do not want to make the same mistake again. We must have a missile system as an element of our defences."

A former head of Poland’s foreign intelligence service faces charges of illegal detention and use of corporal punishment at an alleged secret CIA “black site” used to house high-ranking terrorism suspects.

Zbigniew Siemiatowski confirmed to Gazeta Wyborcza, a Polish newspaper, that prosecutors had charged him as part of their long-running investigation into a secret detention centre in eastern Poland used by the CIA from 2002 to 2003 for suspects in transit to Guantanamo Bay, but said he refused to co-operate.

WARSAW — President Barack Obama, set to visit Warsaw this month, will announce the details of a move of U.S. Air Force F-16 fighter jets to Poland from the Aviano Air Base in Italy, the Polish press reports today. If the plan becomes reality, the move will irk Russia and may become a serious test of the quality of the reset in relations between Washington and Moscow, as well as those between Moscow and Warsaw.

It’s a move Poland has long wanted. It isn’t currently threatened by a foreign power, Polish President Bronislaw Komorowski said in his inaugural speech last year. But the memory of occupation and foreign rule — by the Habsburg empire, Prussia, Russia, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union — at various points between the late 18th century and 1989 lives on in this country, as does the memory of abandonment by European allies when Hitler attacked in 1939, igniting World War II.

A U.S. Patriot missile battery has arrived in Poland as part of an agreement to upgrade the NATO ally's air defenses, the U.S. embassy said on Monday, in a deployment likely to irritate neighboring Russia.

The battery, manned by up to 150 U.S. troops, will be stationed for about one month four times a year in Morag, northern Poland, close to Russia's exclave of Kaliningrad. Its main mission is to train Polish military personnel.

WARSAW, May 18 (Reuters) - Poland expects a U.S. Patriot battery to be deployed on its soil in 2009 regardless of whether President Barack Obama opts to press ahead with missile defence plans in Europe, a senior defence official said on Monday.

NATO member Poland agreed last year to host 10 interceptors as part of a planned U.S. missile defence shield which is strongly opposed by Russia. In return, Washington pledged to help update Poland's air defences with, among others, a Patriot battery.

"We expect the Patriot battery to be deployed on Polish soil by the end of 2009, as initially agreed with the Americans. This is important for Polish public opinion," Deputy Defence Minister Stanislaw Komorowski told Reuters.
