Newsweek: China Steps up Combat Drills Near Taiwan As Invasion Fears Rise
Chinese warships have been holding military combat drills in waters near Taiwan for more than a week, Beijing state media said on Tuesday. The news comes amid rising cross-strait tensions and invasion fears.
Since June 17, a group of navy warships, including a Type 054A frigate and a Type 052C destroyer, have been conducting exercises near Taiwan, including in the Bashi Channel and the Taiwan Strait. That's according to 81.cn, an official publication of the Chinese army.
“The drills tested the military and training abilities of warship, aviation and coastal defense troops, via organizing real combat training in multiple areas of the ocean,” it said.

China is doing this for three reasons:
1. North Korea
2. Trade war
3. The fear their perceived might is dwindling. It's not been a good two years for China and the world starts to notice how weak they actually are (see their faked gdp data and trade war they cannot win. .they're being slapped around like a Mosquito by trump and they hate it).. they need to show strength. Currently China holds a small advantage in the west Pacific. Under trump however, the navy (and US military in general) is coming back and with a lot more power.. and the US economy is now twice as big as China. So yeah. .the chinese either do it now, while they still hold some cards regarding north Korea and can perhaps force the US to look away, or they'd have to postpone for a few decades again which would be a huge loss of face after all the other mishaps lately and their previously declared timelines for one China. If they lost north Korea and Kim sticks with Trump,then they must act now or be completely encircled with the chance to lose Taiwan forever to western influence/free life and democracy.
I think they'll go for it this time. .it's the right time. .next year might be too late already at the speed with which trump and the US economy moves. .
