A review of North Korean state media provides key insights about Pyongyang’s approach to the issue of denuclearization.

Based on a careful reading of official reports after the Singapore summit, North Korea appears to be signaling domestically that the government will pursue an arms agreement that the regime hopes eventually will lead to lifting economic sanctions. State-controlled North Korean propaganda outlets featured the summit in Singapore between President Trump and Kim Jong-un as a “great event” that promoted what was described as reconciliation, peace, stability and prosperity on the Korean Peninsula.

WNU Editor: For the moment, the bellicose statements and threats of the past are no longer being broadcasted. But what I would really like to know is what does the average North Korean think. I am not there, but I personally suspect that they now have high expectations that their lives are going to get better, and that they will have the chance to enjoy some of the comforts that they see foreigners are enjoying via through TV news broadcasts, communications with contacts abroad, and smuggled thumb drives with South Korean TV programs. And this is where North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has to balance everything. It is one thing to give hope to a people that their lives are going to get better, it is another thing when you take it away.
