North Korean Leader's Sister Says Denuclearisation Is 'Not Possible' At This Time

ABC News Online: North Korean leader's sister says another summit unlikely but a 'surprise thing may still happen'

Kim Yo-jong, the sister of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-un, said another summit with the United States would only be useful for Washington at this point, adding her country had no intention of "threatening the US," according to state media.

Ms Kim said in her personal opinion, there is unlikely to be another summit between leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump this year but "a surprise thing may still happen," state news agency KCNA reported on Friday (local time).

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said he was "very hopeful" about resuming talks with North Korea about denuclearisation and appeared to leave open the possibility of another summit between the countries' leaders.

North Korea Says Little Reason To Maintain Kim-Trump Ties

Reuters: North Korea says little reason to maintain Kim-Trump ties: KCNA

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea sees little use maintaining a personal relationship between leader Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump if Washington sticks to hostile policies, state media reported on Friday - the two-year anniversary of the leaders’ first summit.

U.S. policies prove Washington remains a long-term threat to the North Korean state and its people and North Korea will develop more reliable military forces to counter that threat, Foreign Minister Ri Son Gwon said in a statement carried by state news agency KCNA.

Trump and Kim exchanged insults and threats during 2017 as North Korea made large advances in its nuclear and missile programme and the United States responded by leading an international effort to tighten sanctions.

North Korea Says It Will Cut Military And Political Communications With South Korea

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un takes part in the 13th Political Bureau meeting of the 7th Central Committee of the Workers' Party of Korea on June 7

Daily Mail: North Korea says it will cut military and political communications with 'enemy' South Korea in row over anti-Kim leaflets sent over the border

* North Korea will cut military and political communication lines to South Korea
* It is upset about defectors sending leaflets and other materials to the country
* On Tuesday, North Korea will end lines of communication at a liaison office

North Korea will cut military and political communication lines to 'enemy' South Korea on Tuesday, state media said, after threats over activists sending anti-Pyongyang leaflets over the border.

For several days, North Korea has lashed out at South Korea, threatening to close an inter-Korean liaison office and other projects if the South does not stop defectors from sending leaflets and other material into the North.

Pyongyang 'will completely cut off and shut down the liaison line between the authorities of the North and the South, which has been maintained through the North-South joint liaison office,' as well as other communication links 'from 12:00 on June 9, 2020,' the Korean Central News Agency said.

North Korea Has Stopped Answering Calls From South Korea

BBC: North Korea: Call from South to North goes unanswered for first time

South Korea's daily call to a jointly-run liaison office in North Korea has gone unanswered for the first time.

The break came days after North Korea said it would pull out of the inter-Korean liaison office, located in the North Korean border city of Kaesong.

The agency was set up to reduce tensions between the two nations - part of an agreement signed by leaders Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un in 2018.

The agency was temporarily closed in January due to Covid-19 restrictions.

But the two sides had been in regular contact until Monday.

South Korean Intelligence Says N. Korean Leader Looking To Hold 3rd Summit With U.S. In December

Reuters: North Korea, U.S. could resume talks in mid-November: South Korean MP

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea and the United States could hold another round of working-level talks as soon as mid-November to expedite progress before a year-end deadline set by the North, a member of South Korea’s parliament said on Monday.

North Korean and U.S. officials met last month in Stockholm, for the first time since U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed in June to reopen denuclearization talks that stalled after a failed summit in Vietnam in February.

But the talks in Sweden broke off with the North’s envoy saying the United States failed to show flexibility.

North Korea Says Nuclear Talks Have Broken Down. U.S. Disagrees

Daily Mail: North Korea ends nuclear talks with the US just HOURS after they started and blames America for bringing 'nothing to the negotiation table' - but Washington claims the talks went well

* North Korea's chief nuclear negotiator announced end of talks in Stockholm
* Working-level discussions began on Thursday in the Swedish capital
* A day earlier, the North successfully test-fired submarine-launched missile

Working-level nuclear talks between North Korea and the United States have broken off, North Korea's chief negotiator said on Saturday.

'The negotiations have not fulfilled our expectation and finally broke off,' the North's chief nuclear negotiator, Kim Myong Gil, told reporters through an interpreter outside the country's embassy in Stockholm.

The North Korean delegation arrived in Stockholm on Thursday for the working-level denuclearization talks.

Kim blamed Washington for bringing 'nothing to the negotiation table' at the meeting, which came after months of stalemate.

He said talks broke down 'entirely because the U.S. has not discarded its old stance and attitude.'

North Korea Wants Progress On Talks With the U.S.

Reuters: North Korea says lack of progress casts doubt on prospects for future summit with U.S.: KCNA

SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea said on Friday that a lack of progress in implementing agreements made between U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un cast doubt on prospects for a future summit, state news agency KCNA said.

“The U.S. has done nothing for implementing the joint statement” from the first summit between Trump and Kim in Singapore last year, KCNA said, quoting North Korean Foreign Ministry advisor Kim Kye Gwan.

The official criticized the joint military drills between U.S. and South Korea, as well as strengthened sanctions and pressure on North Korea.

President Trump Says 'Probably Not' The Right Time To Visit Pyongyang

AFP: Trump says 'probably not' right time to visit Pyongyang

US President Donald Trump said Monday that it is "probably not" the right time for him to visit North Korea but he could see doing so sometime in the future.

"I don't think we're ready for that," Trump told reporters when asked about visiting Pyongyang for a meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. "I think we have a ways to go yet.

"The relationship is very good," Trump added, but the time was not right for a visit to Pyongyang.

"I would do it at sometime, at sometime in a later future," he said. "And depending on what happens, I'm sure he'll love coming to the United States also."

SEOUL/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - North Korea said on Monday it was willing to restart nuclear talks with the United States in late September, but warned that chances of a deal could end unless Washington takes a fresh approach.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed in a June 30 meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump to reopen working-level talks stalled since their failed February summit in Hanoi, but this has yet to happen in spite of repeated appeals from Washington.

In a statement carried by North Korea’s official KCNA news agency, Vice North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son Hui said Pyongyang was willing to have “comprehensive discussions” with the United States in late September at a time and place agreed between both sides.

In a speech to mark the 74th anniversary on Thursday of Korea’s liberation from Japan’s 1910-45 rule, Moon also said South Korea would “gladly join” hands with its former colonial ruler to defuse an escalating trade dispute whose roots lie in the country’s bitter wartime history.

Pyongyang said it was “senseless” for Seoul to hope for a resumption of inter-Korean dialogue while it continued its military exercises with the US.

On Saturday, the regime fired what appeared to be two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea, the fifth round of launches in less than three weeks.

North Korea Warns It Might Resume Nuclear And Missile Tests

The Hill: North Korea warns US-South Korea drills threaten nuclear talks

North Korea is warning that planned U.S.-South Korea military drills could pose a threat to denuclearization talks between Washington and Pyongyang.

A statement from North Korea published by its official Korean Central News Agency said that President Trump had promised to halt the exercises during two of his meetings with Kim Jong Un, but that the planned drills and weapons sent to South Korea show the U.S. is not keeping up its agreement, according to The Associated Press.

“With the U.S. unilaterally reneging on its commitments, we are gradually losing our justifications to follow through on the commitments we made with the U.S. as well,” the statement said.

How Should South Korea Handle North Korea?

Aidan Foster-Carter, 38 North: How Should South Korea Handle the North? Reciprocity/Bipartisanship/Planning for the Long Haul

A year on from the extraordinary Panmunjom Summit—the first meeting between South Korean President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un—which raised so many hopes, the inter-Korean march toward peace has ground to a halt. Already this year the North had slowed the pace. And now Kim Jong Un has stomped off the field in a post-Hanoi huff.

A mercurial US President Donald Trump and a scheming National Security Advisor John Bolton are hardly Moon Jae-in’s fault. But Kim seems minded to shoot the middleman. His hard-line policy speech on April 12 to the Supreme People’s Assembly (SPA) included criticism of the “south Korean authorities” for “pos[ing] as a meddlesome ‘mediator’ and ‘facilitator’ as they busy themselves with foreign trips.” Moon was not named, but this mean snark was uttered the same day he returned from Washington, after yet another noble attempt to promote peace and dialogue on the peninsula.

* But he is likely to retain his high standing in the Workers’ Party, analysts say, as the dismissal indicates diplomacy will be returned to the foreign ministry

North Korea’s leader Kim Jong-un
has fired his top envoy for nuclear talks with the United States, blaming him for the collapse of the second Trump-Kim summit
in Hanoi, a South Korean lawmaker said on Wednesday, citing security briefings.

Kim Yong-chol, the senior official who delivered Kim’s letters to Trump and has acted as US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s counterpart, was dismissed as the chief of the United Front Department, said the head of the South Korean parliament’s intelligence committee Lee Hye-hoon.

North Korea's Foreign Ministry has issued a stinging rebuke of United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, hours after the country claimed to have tested a new tactical weapon.

In a statement released by the state-run Korean Central News Agency, Foreign Ministry official Kwon Jong Gun said Pompeo had been "letting loose reckless remarks and sophism of all kinds against us every day."

Kwon said North Korean leader Kim Jong Un had made his "principled stand" on negotiations between Pyongyang and Washington clear in a recent speech to the country's rubberstamp parliament.

"Everyone has a clear interpretation of his speech which says that the US should change its way of calculation and come up with responsive measures before the end of this year," Kwon said.
