Dan Gouré, RCD: What If the U.S. 'Pulls the Plug' on Afghanistan?
The U.S. may be approaching a crucial decision concerning its military involvement in Afghanistan. Secretary of Defense James Mattis says U.S. activity there won’t end anytime soon. The question is, will President Trump stick with a plan that does not promise victory?
First, understand the mission. After 2014, Afghanistan became responsible for its own security. The Obama drawdown removed U.S advisers from regular Afghanistan units. NATO’s Operation Resolute Support started in 2015. Technically, it is a “non-combat” mission where security assistance advisers train and go out on missions with the Afghan Army.

Obama drawdown? We were fully winning in Afghanistan early on after 9/11...then what happened? It was at THAT point
that Taliban made comeback. when did things change? Why?

17 years and counting to yet another year without a viable plan to destroy the Taliban. Clearly stationing 11,000 troops or 100,000 troops is no end into itself.
The best most effective strategy was the one adopted in Oct 2001, when the US inserted small action squads, just a few hundred, in the Northern Alliance areas and directed precise strikes on the Tabliban. In a few weeks the country was free of Taliban rule. Perhaps that's the right way to go.
