Business Insider: Russia reportedly warned Mattis it could use nuclear weapons in Europe, and it made him see Moscow as an 'existential threat' to the US

* During the early months of the Trump administration, Russia reportedly told Defense Secretary Jim Mattis of its willingness to use nuclear weapons under certain conditions.
* It's not clear in what context the warning was made, but both the US and Russia have stated under what circumstances they would use nuclear weapons.
* Russia's warning to Mattis came in regard to the Baltic states, which have warned of Russia's growing interference.

At some point during the Trump administration, Russia told Defense Secretary Jim Mattis that it could use nuclear weapons in the event of a war in Europe — a warning that led Mattis to regard Moscow as major threat to the US.

According to "Fear," Bob Woodward's recently released book about turmoil in the White House, Moscow's warning was in regard to a potential conflict in the Baltic countries of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

WNU Editor: I am not sure about this claim. It is true that for the past few years the Pentagon has been speculating that the Russian Ministry of Defense is ready to accept the concept of waging a limited nuclear war .... Is Russia 'Actively' Considering Using Nuclear Weapons On A Limited Basis? (February 26, 2018). But from what I read and know on the Russian side .... their view is the same as mine .... that in the event of a war between two nuclear powers, a limited nuclear war would not be possible. Once one nuclear device goes off, it will only be a question of a few hours before all of them become used.

How appropriate. You called him "Boob Woodward!"

Freudian slip and most apropos.

Ya know maybe it wasn't a Freudian slip.

English would be WNU 3rd language at least. He's been in Canada for over a decade.

This whole language thing is not as hard as he makes it out to be. Sure people appreciate others being self-deprecating to an extent, but when WNU says he is practicing his English, it should be taken with a grain of salt.

Sure WNU may not know all the idiom s and it make take another 2 decades to become as proficient as a native speaker.

But we are not talking idioms here when looking at the words Bob & Boob. Sure it is great fun. Woodward is a despicable man.

I think it was purposeful. The Dems are whipping up hysteria. Can a willing press and a political establishment always calm it down after whipping it up?

If it cannot, then how dangerous is that?

We are not talking "Hari Seldon" smart. Sure Hari is a fictional character. The point is we do not know human psychology so well as to play with like whipping up hysterias.

How many psychological; theories that have been around 2 or 3 decades have failed to replicate?

But if things go as planned, we get a Democrat HoR and who knows we might get that war with Russia.

Or the press might be able to dial it back. But all that hysteria becomes historiography and become an easily tapped reservoir for the next time. One of these times we might all get burned.

Get iodide?
