Mark Galeotti, The Atlantic: Don’t Fear the Russian Military
The week-long exercises, which kicked off yesterday, are intended as a show of might. But the country is in no position to wage a real conflict.
The headline figures for Russia’s Vostok (or “East”) military exercises, which began yesterday, are dramatic: 300,000 soldiers, 36,000 tanks and other vehicles, 80 ships, and 1,000 aircraft operating across more than half the country. Syria is not a real war for Russia. They have a smattering of troops here an there. Ukraine is and they have not done well there, nor Georgia nor Chechnya.
SD, I don't know. They haven't missed a hospital yet in Syria. 7 is the count I've seen a number of times. On the other hand, maybe numerous bombs were dropped per hospital. If so that's not so impressive. One bomb...one hospital. Now that's sumthin' to crow about in Pravda.
