Samantha Vinograd, CNN: Putin is winning, and he knows it
Russia: Homecoming
We assess that Russian President Vladimir Putin views your invitation to visit Washington in 2019 as a kind of homecoming. After years of attacking the United States through a variety of means -- cyberattacks, information warfare and more -- Putin thinks he's in control of events here in the United States for several reasons.

WNU Editor: This CNN reporter/analyst may believe Putin is "winning", but the view from the Kremlin is radically different. Russia is stuck in the Syrian quagmire. There is a very real possibility that Russia may find itself in an arms race with the West that it cannot afford. The Ukraine war continues to simmer, and sanctions are still in place. Russia's intelligence agency the GRU has been exposed to be a bumbling and inept intelligence agency with the Skripal poisoning revelations. We are at the beginning of a new Cold War, and U.S. - Russian relations show no signs of improving. The Russian economy is growing but far short of its potential and what are people's expectations. The Russian government has also imposed strict austerity measures that no one is happy with. And within the Kremlin itself .... infighting over who will succeed President Putin when he is expected to retire in 5 years. And before I forget .... the Kremlin looks at polls very closely, and they are not happy about this .... Trust in Putin Drops to 39% as Russians Face Later Retirement, Poll Says (Moscow Times). If this is winning .... I want to know what losing looks like.

The CNN analysis is so full of holes that I don't even know where to begin. With that said this is likely very similar to the daily briefings POTUS is getting and confirms what I have long pointed out. US (un)intelligence is essentially worthless as a primary or secondary source and leaders would be ill advised to rely on them.
As to what is really going on, we cannot "know" without real time information from the inside which I do not have. We can apply common sense however. The comments of the editor are probably much closer to accurate than the partisan cheerleading piece put forth by CNN.
The actual policies of Trump towards Russia have been far tougher than that of his predecessor. Perhaps there is a "third way" to deal with Russia that is different from either the Trump way or the way of his opponents. Until such an approach is presented IMHO the only viable option is the Trump approach.
While we cannot know the outcome of the election beforehand, myself and a few others here are predicting a so called "red wave." If this happens, we finally may be able to get the petty ideologues such as those who adhere to the views of the CNN commentator out of the proverbial room once and for all. Once this happens, I actually think we can reach a reasonable accommodation with Russia, China, and other major powers.
"...Russia may find itself in an arms race with the west that it cannot afford..." The "west" or at least America cannot afford this either and with the other major issues it faces can't reasonably be expected to divert the resources to something it doesn't need even if it could afford it. Furthermore having misallocated resources on military procurement and development for decades the US would be very likely to find itself at a decisive disadvantage when the race starts forcing it to play catch up in a race it already cannot reasonably afford. Now if neither side can afford it, this would be a good starting point towards ending it. Once misguided ideologues are out of the picture, I think we can reach a reasonable accommodation.
Cnn "ANALysis" is their legal term for opinion pieces. Nothing has to be true and it certainly isn't. It's their narrative to keep the base thinking "wait what? How come Putin wins. ..freaking Trump (=traitor! Russia!!)"
1. No collusion - or do you honestly think a "putin puppet" & "traitor" as Fred calls our dully elected leader unapologetically, would sit in office after years of this witch hunt?
2. Nato is strengthened and is spending more, especially on the east front
3. Inf which Russia violated is finally scraped (to also address China)
4. North Korea - which Russia helped a lot to break sanctions-looks better than before Trump took office
5. 200 Russian soldiers that attacked an American base killed (didn't like it, but certainly doesn't make Putin look like winning or strong.)
6. Gas pipeline! Germany finally to buy from US instead Russia-that's big!
7. Lethal weapons to Ukraine.
Cnn.go figure. They'll do and say -anything- before midterms. .no wonder their rating tanks year after year. Now even behind a children's network.
Also did you hear the racial joke Hillary made just yesterday about "all blacks look alike"? Of course not. Cnn just loves her. Imagine Trump would make such a joke. Be honest, little parrot. What would happen?
vote Democrat if you don't have a brain left and want the US go downhill instead of kicking ass
8. Russia just sinks own - and only - aircraft carrier by accident. CNN will report tomorrow that Putin wins again because he won't have to pay for maintenance anymore - genius! CNN ANALysis will state: Trump should learn from 5D-chessmaster Putin and sink all our aircraft carriers too! :D
CNN.. omfg what a downfall.
