4 Killed In Possible Terror Attack At Strasbourg's Historic Christmas Market

* The gunman was injured in a police shootout and fled the scene. Police have locked down a neighbourhood
* Police have said they know the identity of the gunman. He was known to the authorities, has a criminal record, and was on a security watchlist which identified him as a threat to the state
* Multiple French news outlets have named the suspect as 29-year-old Strasbourg native 'Chérif C'
* The Strasbourg-based European Parliament was put on lockdown following the shooting

Two people have died and 12 have been injured after a gunman opened fire with an automatic handgun close to a Christmas market in Strasbourg, French authorities have said.

Six of the 12 people were seriously wounded in the attack, 'three of four' of whom may have life-threatening injuries, according to town mayor Roland Ries.

The shooting took place close to the historic Christmas market in Strasbourg's central square Place Kleber.

Police have announced they know the identity of the gunman, who has a criminal record and was a designated 'threat to the state' on a security services watchlist.

He fled the scene after a shootout with police, having previously been wounded by a soldier close to the scene. He is understood to have been cornered by police in the Neudorf district.

Are there really no go zones. Or is it fake news. I have read of the conspiracy theory by the far right to make that sort of stuff up. Notably By the English far right. I would be interested in more info.

Yes there are, numerous documentaries have shown police will not attend certain Muslim commission ghettos.
