Reuters: Taiwan president defiant after China calls for reunification
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan’s President Tsai Ing-wen said on Wednesday the island would not accept a “one country, two systems” political arrangement with China, while stressing all cross-strait negotiations needed to be on a government-to-government basis.
Tsai spoke after Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a speech earlier on Wednesday that nobody can change the fact that Taiwan is part of China, and that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait should seek “reunification”.
Tsai also urged China to understand Taiwanese people’s thinking and needs.

Taiwanese can do MUCH better than living under the rule of China. Who in their right mind would want to submit themselves to such a tyrannic regime? We've seen everything from 1984-style surveillance and shaming systems to concentration camps (for reeducation), spying and intimidating on people who believe in a deity, etc. And look at what happened to Hong Kong - how they were treated, how the book dealers who sold books critical of China were treated. Abducted in the night, tortured and then shoved in front of cameras to apologize for their mistakes. Just wow. Good luck to Taiwan, hope you stay free
