New York Times: Mueller Report Likely to Renew Scrutiny of Steele Dossier
WASHINGTON — The 35-page dossier, spiced up with tales of prostitutes and spies, sketched out a hair-raising story more than two years ago. Russian intelligence had used bribery and blackmail to try to turn Donald J. Trump into a source and ally, it said, and the Kremlin was running some Trump campaign aides practically as agents.
But the release on Thursday of the report by the special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, underscored what had grown clearer for months — that while many Trump aides had welcomed contacts with the Russians, some of the most sensational claims in the dossier appeared to be false, and others were impossible to prove. Mr. Mueller’s report contained over a dozen passing references to the document’s claims but no overall assessment of why so much did not check out.
Now the dossier — financed by Hillary Clinton’s campaign and the Democratic National Committee, and compiled by the former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele — is likely to face new, possibly harsh scrutiny from multiple inquiries.
Republicans in Congress have vowed to investigate. The Justice Department’s inspector general is considering whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation improperly relied on the dossier in applying to the secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court for a warrant to eavesdrop on Carter Page, a Trump adviser. The inspector general wants to know what the F.B.I. learned about Mr. Steele’s sources and whether it disclosed any doubts about their veracity to the court.

WNU Editor: Kudos to the New York Times for realizing that the Steele Dossier is bunk .... something that this blogger and many of its readers realized 2 years ago. As to why the media re-evaluation on the Steele Dossier now? The Inspector General's report on how the Department of Justice handled the FISA applications to conduct surveillance of the Trump campaign is coming out in the next month or two, and it looks like many in the media are now conducting a CYA campaign knowing what the IG's conclusions will be.

The "bottom line" has always been this: With how unpopular Trump was to the DC "establishment", if they had had any sort of actual evidence of criminal activity they would have shown their cards by now and impeached, prosecuted, etc. Congress should quit trying to change the past; work with the President that got elected and do their jobs to serve the public.
Hmm, now the NYT notices? Even a blind pig will find some acorns.
The FBI’s investigation originated with George Papadopoulos, not Christopher Steele
We’ve known since December 2017 that the FBI’s counterintelligence investigation of the Trump campaign began in July 2016 — months before the FBI was even alerted to the existence of the Steele dossier.
Interviews with people familiar with Mr. Steele’s work on the dossier and the F.B.I.’s scramble to vet its claims suggest that misgivings about its reliability arose not long after the document became public — and a preoccupation of Trump opponents — in early 2017. Mr. Steele has made clear to associates that he always considered the dossier to be raw intelligence — not established facts, but a starting point for further investigation.
[the NY Times]
Clearly the dossier was the figment of Hillary's staffs imagination. She roped in contacts around the world, including Russian nationals to make the dossier look like the product of Western intelligence agency's. Fraud, conspiracy, you name it, she and they are guilty.
No Fred.
https://thehill.com/opinion/white-house/425739-fisa-shocker-doj-official-warned-steele-dossier-was-connected-to-clinton
the dossier was never fully vetted and though it might have been funded by Clinton people it was not cited by the NY Times as a reliable document. Even Steele himself said it was simply notes and not fully vetted. Thus, NY Times attackers, show specific fact that the NY Times said it was a trustworthy, reliable document.
FISA obtained on other evidence!
it's already been established by the House Intelligence Committee that the Russia investigation began after the FBI learned that another campaign aide, George Papadopoulos, had been approached by a Russian agent. The agent told Papadopoulos the Russians had incriminating information about Hillary Clinton, including emails, according to court documents.. Papadopoulos then mentioned to an Australian diplomat that the Russians had "dirt" on Clinton, the Australians contacted the U.S. government, and the FBI began to take a look.
You can successfully argue with Fred just as well as you can successfully argue with stupid itself. He is a girly boy that hides behind his computer, belching froth and panting all day, whilst painting his nails and shooting himself in the foot and blaming others. A mindless living joke. He is such a good boy.
Fred,
Read the Hill article.
Over the past two years I have done hundreds of posts where the media used and quoted the Steele Dossier to back up their reporting, including the New York Times.
Here is a perfect example on how the New York Times handled the Steele Dossier in its reporting.
https://www.nytimes.com/2017/12/30/us/politics/how-fbi-russia-investigation-began-george-papadopoulos.html
"Others believed that the possibility of a compromised presidential campaign was so serious that it warranted the most thorough, aggressive tactics. Even if the odds against a Trump presidency were long, these agents argued, it was prudent to take every precaution.
That included questioning Christopher Steele, the former British spy who was compiling the dossier alleging a far-ranging Russian conspiracy to elect Mr. Trump. A team of F.B.I. agents traveled to Europe to interview Mr. Steele in early October 2016. Mr. Steele had shown some of his findings to an F.B.I. agent in Rome three months earlier, but that information was not part of the justification to start an counterintelligence inquiry, American officials said."
It looks like the New York Times is treating it as a trustworthy document.
As for the person who approached George Papadopoulos, he was Joseph Mifsud. Many believe that he is an MI6 plant and not a Russian spy. Many have also been wondering if this was an U.K. intelligence operation, and that Joseph Mifsud and Christopher Steele were in on it albeit at the behest of those above them.

FFS Fred, you idi$t, have you no shame???
YOU KEPT PUSHING THIS NARRATIVE FOR TWO YEARS, BEING THE DUMB PARROT YOU ARE
have you no honor? it was YOU on this blog who posted hundreds, if not thousands(!) of links to MSM, trying to talk us into the credibility of this Steele dossier.
I remember how you - Fred Lapides - for two years(!) pushed it on us, and I told you for two years it is BS.
Two years man. Think of the damage you have done, just you alone. People might have believed you and your stupid, arrogant, leftist nonsense.
Don't you see how you were manipulated by team Clinton? Don't you want revenge for what they did to you?
My god, man. You are 90 or something, right? I know you served, and I respect you for that - but that does not mean you get to ride out the end of your life by ruining this nation and pointing to your service long long ago. You too have a responsibility and it is NOT posting thousands of links to lies - without thinking of what you are doing!!
Man up!
Couldn't agree more with Anon @ 2:53
Good to see some people still think for themselves. :o)
I can attest that Fred has been perhaps the dumbest poster on this blog. I have followed this for more than a year and just completely agree that Fred is morally and intellectually corrupt. But that's what happens to people if they watch CNN and post links to the NYT as if they were the keepers of truth.
Remember how Fred called our president a "Nazi"?? Remember how he called him a "sexist"? A "white supremacist" who uses "dog whistles" and how all of his supporters are brown shirts? Fred tried to bully us all to go along with his narrative. Now he pretends he didn't do it. Deleted his post. Fred Lapides is perhaps the biggest liar I have ever witnessed on the web. This guy has no shame, no integrity. He just keeps voting Democrat - no matter what they did. He will repeat their lies. He will support them. He must -- just like Clinton needs Democrats to be in power - so does Fred. He bet his entire reputation on this lie, and now the check bounced. Well, Fred - I too will not forget what you have done!
And people like Fred don't seem to recognize how many times the main stream media was wrong. Not once. Not twice. Not ten times. Not a hundred times - several thousand of lies over two years, all aimed to unseat our president, to manipulate his and our agenda - our vote!
Such a liar. I almost threw up when he again didn't feel any remorse, whatsoever. People like him make our democracy fail. He just keeps lying, and lying and lying and posting this BS links that no one with half a brain ever reads. And he is a porn website operator who points fingers at Trump. The hypocrisy. Typical Democrat. No thank you, Fred. I don't need your smut. I don't need your lies. F off!
Steele is a BRITISH agent, not Russian!
OK - so we know now that the Steele dossier is not only FAKE, but also a RUSSIAN propaganda/disinformation tool. And who pushes this dossier narrative on us for two years? Why, Fred of course. Who here actually knows who Fred is? Anyone met him? No one can be that stupid for that long. He claims he has served (maybe he got shot in the head, I don't know, but I do know that most people by now know the Democrats - CLINTON! - paid for the dossier and together with Comey pushed it on us via FISA abuses. Yet, Fred keeps on trucking, keeps on posting links to the MSM, telling us to trust him. Yeah, right, Fred. I trust you after I trust Putin. You have 0 credibility, my friend. You often complain when people call out your stupidity (rightfully so - and the damage you have caused), and you call us deplorables, brown shirts, nazis, sexists and God knows what else you spew every day. Yet, we are to listen to you? WHY? Are you just a sick attention whore who does whatever it takes? For the love of God, man, what you have done for two years.. wow..
Carl. You gotta read up. I'll leave it at that. we can't keep explaining it
.....and this is why the Republicans will not impeach Trump! MAGA. It's all hot air folks, to fool you into looking the other way.
Carl,
Like the other anon said You gotta read up and keep up.
"Steele is a BRITISH agent, not Russian! "
Steele is an ex-British agent and he was in need of money. London and environs is not a cheap place to live.
If Steele was fired or left ones tep ahead of the law, the Brits intel service will not tell us. That is standard HR practice. So Steele had 10 or 15 years as an agent. We do not know if he was a good agent or a bad agent. He can spin it anyway he wants knowing that HR practice is to say nothing.
Steele was a Brtish Agent and?
Robert Hannssen was an American agent and he worked for the Russians.
So by you saying that Steele was a British agent that proves what exactly?
"FFS Fred, you idi$t, have you no shame???"
We should ask his wife.
We should just walk up to the door, ring the doorbell and when she answers, ask if Fred has any shame.
Fred has a trophy wife decades and decades younger than him and all he can do is spout Democrat talking ooints and look up smut.
Exit stage left for Frothy Fred the moment anyone confronts him. Name calling girly boy is probably painting his nails in his dead mothers bathroom. All his panting and bubbly froth made his screen fog up.
He is such a good boy.
I never really read his comments. What a waste of time and space this guy is. His greatest accomplishment:being drafted. He wouldn't serve voluntarily. He was drafted .he's no hero. He didn't see battle. He was likely a cook or shoe polisher. .or a walter mitty type of guy - you know those guys who claim to have been heroes and then walk around the rest of their life pretending and virtue signaling and voting Democrat.that's what he is
