He could have worked part time. The plane tickets would have ate up $300 to $600 or more a round trip. More than 1 round trip and he is looking at under $19,000 or $18,000.

The Guardian did not give much. The SCMP gave a picture of the homestead. There is not much point publicly asking the '5 Whys' without knowing where he lived, how he lived, what his extracurrcilars were, who he hung with, what he though of his peers and bosses, and the establishment. The newspapers are just going to rehash things like a washing machine adding a few tidbits here and there but nothing approaching comprehensive. A person will have to wait for a book.
This guy did not graduate high school with the thought of "Gee some day I will steal state secrets and sell them to the enemy". He might have been cynical or jaundiced at that age, but he probably did not think espionage. While he is mostly responsible, there is plenty of blame to go around.
