Reuters: Russia warns of repeat of 1962 Cuban missile crisis

MOSCOW (Reuters) - The U.S. deployment of land-based missile systems near Russia’s borders could lead to a stand-off comparable to the 1962 Cuban missile crisis, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying on Monday.

Russia has been fiercely critical of U.S. plans to deploy missile systems in eastern Europe, and of Washington’s withdrawal from the INF arms control treaty.

The Cuban missile crisis erupted in 1962 when the Soviet Union responded to a U.S. missile deployment in Turkey by sending ballistic missiles to Cuba, sparking a standoff that brought the world to the brink of nuclear war.

WNU Editor: The Kremlin's options are limited on this one. They want the end of sanctions, but responding to these new missile deployments will result in an environment that will only guarantee the continuation of sanctions. My prediction. The primary reason why there are tensions in Europe today is because of Ukraine, and because of these tensions all sides are building up their military forces. Solve Ukraine, tensions will decrease and the need for new missile deployments will disappear. That is why I expect an intensification of talks between Russia and Ukraine to start after new parliamentary elections in Ukraine have been completed, and a solution found to stop the war and to resolve the Crimea question. If not .... we may end up in a new missile crisis, but the shape and in form on how this would may is still unknown.

Times have changed since the mid 1980's. The USA has no national interest in stationing nuclear missiles in Poland, Germany, Romania or anywhere else in Europe. Those countries don't want them either. They should but they don't and no way the US in the name of NATO forces INF missiles to be deployed.

Now in the Pacific region, I wouldn't be surprised if the USA deploys in Alaska, Guam and other islands it controls.

The US has been allies with Britain for over a 100 years. You do not abandon good allies. Doing so would set a bad precedent and you will not easily get ones in the future (if at all).

The government in western ukraine is too reliant on Banderite militias like the Azov Battalion, and the people in Dobass are understandably uncomfortable laying down their arms to openly neo-nazi groups with a very public online history of (proudly) videotaped atrocities. The new PM needs to purge the military of them. It's not 2014 anymore and the military shouldn't STILL be utterly reliant on those lowlifes to project power. For that matter, countries like Canada should stop pouring weapons and equipment into Ukraine until they can give a promise on military reform. Until then, we're just just driving the wedge between the two side deeper.
