China is Building Three Huge Helicopter 'Aircraft Carriers'

Sebastien Roblin, National Interest: Bad News: China is Building Three Huge Helicopter 'Aircraft Carriers'

What will Beijing do with them?

Along the Huangpu River in the Hudong-Zhonghua shipyards in Shanghai, the hull modules of two huge new vessels have been captured in photographs taken by passengers in overflying airliners. Then early in July 2019, ground-level images of the construction leaked onto Chinese social media.

Measuring the length of two-and-half football fields and estimated to displace between 30,000-40,000 tons once in the water, the vessels appear to be the first of three Type 075 Landing Helicopter Docks (LHDs), essentially moving naval bases that can carry dozens of helicopters and launch amphibious landing craft from their floodable well deck.

The difference being that everyone else will be flying 5th gen Jump jets off of theirs, China will be flying crappy Russian copy helicopters...

If a top of the line carrier is at severe risk, an helo carrier is at more risk except in a permissive environment. This is a misallocation of resources.

The Chinese Navy already can natch the US. Such a thing is already reality. It's not helpful to speak of current developments as something that's going to happen in the future.

The only clear cut advantage the US has is the nuclear arsenal IF it works. Prior to the ascendancy of President Trump this had been neglected. Candidate Trump rightly questioned whether or not our nuclear arsenal would actually work if needed. He went on to say that the first thing he did as POTUS was to fix this. I hope and pray he actually did. Given the lack of criticism from his adversaries, my working assumption is he actually did.

Hence Chinese trade with North Korea among other things is down. The Chinese respect and fear President Trump and the South Koreans, Japanese, and others have been served notice that America won't be their chimps forever. Candidate Trump rightly called them out.

Prediction: a conventional war in the South China Sea is won and won easily by China against the US at this point ih time. Chinese Naval superiorty to the US isn't something that's going to happen in the future. It's already happened and will become even more lopsided UNLESS US political and military leaders make changes. US political and military leaders need to plan and act accordingly. Decisions that are based on ideology or how we wish things were as opposed to reality not only aren't helpful but actually undermine our position

The US have decades of experience. China is only just becoming a blue water navy. I think you underestimate American naval power.

James said...

Fusion,
I agree. With only this caveat, all things change eventually.

B.Poster said...

Very respectfully the "decades of experience" much of which IMHO involves fruitless operations that not only don't advance our interests but not only don't advance our interests but not only undermine them undermines our national security. Furthermore such operations sap our strength and undermine even basic American national security.

High profile collisions between the US Navy and other vessels tend to support this position. After "decades of experience" the US Navy and other branches of the US Armed forces are worn down to the point that even basic national defense is problematic at best.

Conclusion: in any conventional military conflict anywhere in the we world China and/or Russia would win and they'd do so easily. American military and political leaders need to plan and act accordingly.

As a Canadian, none of this matters to you. Your loved ones are safe. The heads of my loved ones are on the chopping block!!

"All things change eventually." This is true. Who knows someday the US may be on par with the Russia and China. That could happen "some day: in the future. Who knows someday America might even be "great " It could happen!!

Stop with the as a Canadian, as a Australian, as a.... nonsense, they are on the block right next to you.
But sleep easy knowing that simulators do not a combat ready navy make.

fazman said...

It already has, the status quo is yet to change and probably won't for 2 decades, the US is on top.

James said...

Poster,
I disagree with you and I agree with fazman. The US does rule the seas much as the British did circa 1890. The "eventually" will come but I believe along the lines of fazman of a couple of decades of US dominance. When it does come I think it will mostly unforeseen and a surprise ( much like the rise of the carrier and it's unique operations.
Years ago I had a friend who attended a combined US/British naval conference
At the end of a British officer's presentation an American naval officer asked him to compare British and US US naval traditions. His answer: "The British Navy has traditions, the American Navy has habits." The US Navy has ruled the seas since 1943 and shall at least until 2043, but " eventually" will come it always does and always from an unexpected direction.

B.Poster said...

Interesting conversation!! Thank you for the dialogue on this. I think we agree that if "eventually" has not come it will. After all nothing lasts forever.

The only way to "know" the outcome of a war is to actually fight the war. IMHO "eventually" has already happened. China has surpassed us in terms of conventional Naval and military capabilities. As the US military is currently configured, I conclude that China wins a conventional Naval or other military conflict against the US any where at any time and does so easily. The problem is exacerbated by the unhelpful tendencies of US leadership to both overestimate our capabilities while underestimating the capabilities of adversaries and potential adversaries.

Perhaps my analysis is flawed. I certainly hope it is.

Good thing you have a day job.

Interesting comment. I wish I had a day job but I don't. In fact I haven't had a day job for over 24 years now. Although for five years a decade ago I was on the local Township's Committee of Adjustments. We met 10 times a year to review and adjudicate on residents' applications to work around setback requirments for buildings etc., for which I got $100 a day and a free Christmas dinner.

Your ability to post frequently suggest you actually don't have a job or if you do, one that has lots of room for idiot posting. Or, of course, maybe that is your job.

You have no day job, because you have no skills.

You missed the point little man. I am 74, retired at 50, need no job which is why I am able to post on this board basically 7/24 if need be. How about your little fella, you retired too, or, is posting here your job.

"..." is not adding any value. You dont "need" to be doing that. You just troll the comments, stroke Fred gently and clean the froth from his bottom and generally annoy others. If you are at lifes end, and are not providing any goods or services for anyone, and only seek to troll WNU after a career of being a professional useless person, then perhaps its time bud.
