Whether or not you believe President Trump should be impeached, we are now in historic territory. When House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry this week, it became increasingly clear the impeachment of Donald Trump is no longer a matter of if but when.
For the founders, there were two essential purposes of impeachment. First, to ensure that Congress had a tool to check the powers of the executive and judiciary, and second, if necessary, to remove officials engaged in wrongdoing from office through trial. Not every participant in the Constitutional Convention wanted to include impeachment, but as James Madison had noted, it was George Mason who challenged his colleagues, asking, “Shall any man be above justice?” It would also be Mason who would suggest that the Constitution include the words “high crimes and misdemeanors,” therefore providing plenty of fodder for both legal counsel and political punditry to determine what that means.

Editor...you show an amazing personal ignorance of the U.S. constutution. It is normal and mandated that co-equal branches of government monitor each other. Knowing that politicians might violate laws, rules, and regulations, the impeachment process was placed in law. Not normal? Poppycock. This is the strength of the Constitution.

More Trump Derangement Syndrome. Neither Trump or B. Clinton deserve/deserved to be impeached under the US Constitution. Both impeachments were driven by misinterpreting the "high crimes and misdemeanors" as meaning the "high" only applied to the crimes and not to the misdemeanor so that any percieved political misdemeanor is grounds for removal. Fortunately the founders took the actual removal power from the mob in the House and requires a trial and 2/3 majority to remove a sitting president.The first commentor shows the same ignorance he is projecting onto the quite knowledgable editor. This will end the same way it did for the Republicans.
The first sentence is spot on. I suspect the big hurry is to try and avoid an election as I think they've already figured out they can't an election. As such, try and remove the president another way and avoid the process of the ballot box altogether.
So, now it is a 1776 fight. The people who line up with foreign interests vs. the patriots putting their lives and fortunes on the line to follow the Constitution as written, not imagined.
Throw all the hate filled invective you want. There are still patriots out there willing to put their careers on the line to honor the Founders.
