Andrew Scheer is stepping down as Conservative leader.
He announced the decision Thursday morning at a caucus meeting and said he plans to ask the party to immediately begin planning a leadership race to succeed him.
Scheer announced his decision publicly in the House of Commons and pleaded with his party to stay united in the wake of his resignation and what could be a fractious leadership contest.
He was emotional in his seven-minute speech to the House of Commons, interrupted multiple times by applause and standing ovations from his caucus. His wife Jill was in the gallery watching.

WNU Editor: Not winning the Federal election in October .... when many within the Conservative party believed was theirs to win .... sealed his fate. What also did not help was that he alienated many in the base on policies and conduct when he was running in the election. Bottom line. My guess is that he realized in the past few weeks that he was not going to survive the leadership review in April of next year, and he made the decision to step down ASAP.
