The foreign minister has condemned Washington's handling of the Iran conflict. Maas has advised following Europe's footsteps in diplomacy and called for further negotiations.
German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas criticized US President Donald Trump on Sunday for his policy of maximum pressure against Iran.
"We should not pretend that an externally induced regime change in Tehran will automatically improve the situation. That has gone badly elsewhere, like in Iraq," Maas told German newspaper Bild am Sonntag.

He has a point. US foreign policy has failed spectacularely in Afghanistan, Iraq, Lybia and Syria, and cost the US taxpayer trillions of $ and thousands of casualties.

Afghanistan: Are the Taliban winning after 19 years or are they moving sideways. Assuming the get back to Kabul and I kind of bet they will, will they last 5 years or 10 years? I don;t think they will last long the 2nd ti me around.
Iraq: Is Iran winning in Iraq? They have the upper hand. They are also devoting more resources to that project. Long term can they keep boots on the ground in Sunni or Kurdish areas of Iraq? Can they continue to murder Shia over poor services? the Iranians cannot even feed themselves. They have a huge water problem. When the do get oil back on line, will the oil exports equal the food imports?
Syria: Syria is not a failure. Is Bashir winning? Is Bashir the Weakest link in the Shia crescent? If Hezbollah, Iran and Russia left, what would be the 1.2 life of an Alawite Baathist government? Russia may not spend as much on Syria as the US does, but its economy is much smaller. Is it the size of Italy's Russia has poured in all the blood and treasure. have they won?
Libya is a failure. Someone, The One, broke the previous government and then did not have any boots on the ground or rebuilding. It called it, "Smart Power". Pottery Barn Rules is only a thang per Colin Powell when the president is white.
