Reuters: Taiwan leader rejects China's offer to unify under Hong Kong model
TAIPEI (Reuters) - Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on Wednesday the island would not accept a “one country, two systems” political formula Beijing has suggested could be used to unify the democratic island, saying such an arrangement had failed in Hong Kong.
China claims Taiwan as its territory, to be brought under Beijing’s control by force if necessary. Taiwan says it is an independent country called the Republic of China, its official name.
Tsai, who’s seeking re-election in a Jan. 11 vote, also vowed in a New Year’s speech to defend Taiwan’s sovereignty, saying her government would build a mechanism to safeguard freedom and democracy as Beijing ramps up pressure on the island.

China had the balls to make an offer that they made Britain and Hong Kong. It is one they reneged on 1/2 way through.
I don't think anyone would suggest China is a "good" country. Is our country (America) a good country? Is any country a "good" country for that matter? IMHO the only country that comes anywhere close to being "good" is Israel.
Is America better than China? I would say so. Admittedly the bar is low.
With that said what did China "renege" on? Taiwan was extremely prosperous. These "protesters" endanger much of that and may have wrecked it beyond repair. I'd think Tawainese would tire of these "protesters" and likely already have.
They continue because someone is funding them. Whose funding them? What do they want? As I understand it, China gave them what they initially asked for.
IMHO should the "protesters" succeed it will be a case of "meet the new boss same as the old boss." Perhaps the new boss may be even worse than the old one!!
IMHO the US has been wise to largely stay out of this one in contrast to Ukraine whete the US stupidly bumbled into these things. Why hasn't China treated this as a "Tianmen Square ?" My sense is they fear president Trump. Thus far he's been prudent to keep us out of this denying China the ammunition they'd need to go in and crush this.
Good luck Tawain. You are in my prayers. You are truly between a rock and a hard place. Go with the tender mercies of the "protesters" or China? Under the rulership of China you were prosperous in ways Americans have never achieved. The "protesters" undermined all this.
IMHO China is basing their immediate future on Trump losing in the upcoming election. Is this a good bet? I hope not!! IMHO it's vitally important that Trump is reelected.
Having China distracted by Taiwan is actually a very good thing!! Trump thus far has handled this extremely well!!
