Iranian General Qassem Soleimani
Martin Chulov and Dan Sabbagh, The Guardian: After Suleimani: Iran's scramble to recover from general's death
Loss of revered Quds Force commander and his aides has derailed country’s momentum in region.
In the early hours of 3 January, Iraq’s prime minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, frantically phoned his advisers. “Something big has happened,” he said, summoning them to a meeting in his office. “You need to come now.”
Like their boss, the advisers had heard the boom of the explosions that crunched into the airport road just after 1am, and their phones had been ringing incessantly. Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis’ death then shouldn’t be discounted either. He was huge on the Iraqi side.
When an organization loses a key member suddenly and unexpectedly, it does take some time for the organization to recover. I have considerable direct and indirect experience dealing with this. In my experience, it will typically take between 3 to 12 months for the organization to fully recover from the sudden and unexpected of a key member. If I were advising the US government and/or POTUS and his team on this, I'd suggest assuming Iran will recover from this loss in about 3 months meaning we have about a month or so left before Iran fully recovers from the loss of Salami.
Arguably IMHO a bigger problem for Iran than the loss of Salami is support from Russia, China, and Europe doesn't seem as rock solid as it used to be. For example, the criticism the US received for the Salami operation was quiet tepid compared to what it could have been or what normally would have been expected.
