Countries across Europe were placed into lockdown yesterday in a desperate attempt to stem the soaring tally of coronavirus cases after the Continent became the new 'epicentre' of the global pandemic.

Meanwhile, Poland shut down all its airports - forcing thousands of stranded British tourists to head out of the country by car.

Borders were also closed to foreign visitors in Denmark, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Austria, Hungary, Russia and Ukraine.

Borders are good. Borders work. Borders are what create and define nationhood. Europe is well advised to use them.

The positive unintended consequences of this outbreak are beginning to pronounce themselves.

*ingrained social distancing
*enhanced personal hygiene
*border enforcement
