The U.S. will suspend funding to the World Health Organization while it reviews the agency’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, President Donald Trump announced Tuesday, saying the international health agency made mistakes that “caused so much death” as the coronavirus spread across the globe.
“Today I’m instructing my administration to halt funding of the World Health Organization while a review is conducted to assess the World Health Organization’s role in severely mismanaging and covering up the spread of the coronavirus,” Trump said at a White House press conference.

WNU Editor: I understand that people are angry at the World Health Organization. WHO failed at the beginning in red-flagging this illness. They trusted China's narrative on this virus when they should not have. It's treatment of Taiwan during this pandemic has been (and continues to be) reprehensible. And it was only on March 11 that they declared a pandemic even though it was clear two weeks before that this was a very infectious disease that had spread throughout the world. But IMHO its money should not be halted. It is the only international organization that exists to confront this pandemic. And while this organization does deserve a clean-up, the time is not now to conduct a purge.

How else to incentivize them to change? The W.H.O. strikes me as a cloistered, globalist, elitist bureaucracy. And a corrupt one. Not the sort of organization that deserves coddling. Stripping funds seems the best way to force them to change. Otherwise any efforts would be utterly ignored.
As you said, their job is critical. Unless they have leadership and processes that can be trusted, they are more harmful than beneficial - as we have seen in their handling of the novel Wuhan coronavirus.
