Chinese Premier Li Keqiang Leaves Out The Word 'Peaceful' When Talking About 'Reunification' With Taiwan

Speaking at the opening session of the National People's Congress on Friday, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang (pictured) said his country would 'resolutely oppose and deter any separatist activities seeking Taiwan independence'. Beijing views self-ruled Taiwan as a province

Daily Mail/Reuters: China drops the word 'peaceful' as it vows to push for 'reunification' with self-ruled Taiwan amid intensifying tensions over the island's sovereignty

* China has never renounced the use of force to bring Taiwan under its control
* Premier Li omitted the word 'peaceful' today while talking about 'reunification'
* Taiwan's pro-independence President Tsai swore in for a second term this week
* The US congratulated Tsai for her re-election in a move that infuriated Beijing

Chinese Premier Li Keqiang left out the word 'peaceful' on Friday while talking about Beijing's desire to 'reunify' with self-ruled Taiwan, an apparent policy shift that comes as ties with Taipei continue on a downward spiral.

Taiwan has complained of increased Chinese military harassment since the coronavirus pandemic began, with fighter jets and naval vessels regularly approaching the island on drills China has described as 'routine'.

The news comes after Taipei's independence-leaning President Tsai Ing-wen swore in for her second term this week and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo congratulated her for the re-election in a move that infuriated the Chinese Communist Party.

In Korea (the 1950s) we had lots of Chinese POWs...fights often broke out between Chinese prisoners, some wanting to return at war's end to be a part of a Communist China. Others, though, wanted no part of Communism in China and wanted to go to Taiwan.
Seems the Chinese govt has plans for; and reunification, one that did not come about between North and South Korea but did come about in the two Germanies and did come about between North and South Korea

So why now?

I guess I get some of China's rationale ..eg

1) US Navy and military readiness currently weakened by covid-19. I get that. Doubly so during long term deployments at sea and under stress. I get that. The immune system suffers a lot then and covid-19/20/21 would kill scores of service men especially on ships and submarines. I get that. Maybe even affect lungs and aircraft operability. I get all that.

2) World economies nearly destroyed by covid-19 and people less likely to fight for a distant island nation. I get that.

2) the US military is only now switching back to focus on large scale wars. Thanks to Obama's famous "pivot to Asia" warning to China WHILE gutting the military at the same time was of course stupid beyond measure and sent all the wrong signals to our allies, all while keeping us deep in the middle east with trillions lost (and Bush's original stupidity). I get that too.

3) I know China is out of money and the collapse is coming. With foreign investment at negative now - meaning everyone jumps off the sinking ship - I get that. And I understand that Taiwan is very rich and would help the Chinese budget mid to long term, especially if the war is short. I get that.

4) I also get that China must not be embarrassed by its small democratic Taiwan neighbor who handled the covid-19 crisis much better than the communist party. I get that as well.

....BUT why would China do this now, while everyone watches and is glued to news and on top rejects Chinese government? Are the Chinese on a suicide mission or is it just red meat for their own hardliners to distract from issues at home?

Likely a combination of both, I guess, but I'd like to hear arguments for WHY China would want to do this now for real?

Is there a necessity on their side?

Just wondering if I missed something WHY NOW?

Anonymous 6:40 PM,
All what you said is 100% right, yes. The only little thing missing part in the puzzle is Xi Jimping.
In China, the PRC is all of all and being the boss is being always right. That's not me, that's the rules. On top of that, in the Chinese hundred years culture, saving face is FIRST. The problem is Xi Jinping said 2 years ago that Taiwan will be "reunified" no later than 2020 ...even by force. Xi Jinping will not want to lose face because he put this goal as the best accomplishment even Mao Zedong could't do it.
Here we are.
