Daily Mail: China charges two Canadians with spying in retaliation for arrest of Huawei executive

* China has charged Ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor
* The two men are 'suspected of foreign espionage' and 'providing state secrets'

* Charges come weeks after a judge ruled Meng's extradition to the U.S. will go ahead to face trial for Huawei's alleged violations of U.S. Iran sanctions

China has formally charged two Canadians with spying, officials said on Friday, more than 18 months after they were arrested in a spat between Beijing and Ottawa.

The pair were detained shortly after Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada on a US warrant, in what is widely believed to have been a retaliatory move from China.

The Supreme People's Procuratorate said Friday it has begun the prosecution of ex-diplomat Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor, who were 'suspected of foreign espionage' and 'providing state secrets'.

WNU Editor: China waited until after Canada lost the vote for a Security Council seat earlier this week to levy these charges. A Security Council seat that I can assure my Canadian friends that China lobbied very hard to make sure that Canada did not win.
