Can The USS Bonhomme Richard Be Saved?

CDR Salamander: The Burning of the USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6)

The pic on the right is from 0700 local time in San Diego via Denis Bondarenko, a civmar across the pier. Over the last 24-hrs, she has burned bow to stern, and overnight fire made it up the island to the bridge, the aft mast collapsed and more. That is only what we can see from the outside, you can imagine the damage internally.

Last night when I realized that after the ship was abandoned, we now had firefighting crews back on board, I was uncharacteristically optimistic, but with the morning not anymore.

WNU Editor: Over the years this blog has covered more than its fair share of fires aboard ships. From that background I can say with confidence that this one does not look good. The fact that the USS Bonhomme Richard is now listing (see above video) is especially troubling. I agree with CDR Salamander's analysis. This is a complete loss. And the priority now is to make it sure it does not sink pier-side.

I'm waiting for the report on this. I just can't fathom that a fire on a mostly metal ship cannot be extinguished.

The decks are tiled. The rest is painted. So it is burnable. Electrical insulation is at least fire resistant. It may not burst into flame, but it can smolder.

I don't understand with compartmentalization how they did not establish fire lines and starve the fire of oxygen. Except maybe they abandoned ship and did not set anything.
