ABC News (Australia): Indonesian navy finds items from missing submarine, no hope of finding survivors 

Indonesia's navy says items have been found from a missing submarine, indicating the vessel with 53 crew members has sunk with no hope of finding survivors. 

Navy Chief Yudo Margono said rescuers found several items including parts of a torpedo straightener, a grease bottle believed to be used to oil the periscope and prayer rugs from the submarine. 

"With the authentic evidence we found believed to be from the submarine, we have now moved from the 'sub missing' phase to 'sub sunk'," Admiral Margono said at a press conference in Bali where the found items were displayed.

CNN: Indonesian navy detects object, narrows search area for missing submarine 

Jakarta, Indonesia (CNN)Indonesian search teams believe they have identified an area where a missing naval submarine with 53 people on board could be located, as authorities warn oxygen on the vessel will run out within hours. 

The area of interest is about 40 kilometers (approximately 25 miles) north of Bali, where oil had been spotted on the surface of the water near the dive point, and where an object likely to have come from the submarine was detected, according to Maj. Gen. Achmad Riad, the head of the military's central information unit.

An Indonesian Navy submarine with 53 people on board has gone missing amid fears it sank during a torpedo drill off the waters of Bali. 

The navy has deployed a number of warships to search for the missing crew and officials fear the vessel sank to the bottom of a trough with a depth of 2,300ft, reports Kompas. 

Indonesian rescuers searching for the submarine found an oil spill today near the vessel's dive location, authorities said.

A Greek navy minesweeper and a Portuguese-flagged cargo ship collided Tuesday outside the country’s main port of Piraeus, leaving two navy crew slightly injured and prompting the evacuation of the severely damaged military vessel. 

It was not immediately clear why the navy ship Kallisto and the Maersk Launceston container vessel, which had been heading to Turkey with 22 crew on board, collided.

Navy Times: Coast Guard crew saves ship from fire while underway in 7th Fleet

The crew of the Waesche, a national security cutter, battled heroically to save their ship after a fire broke out while it was underway in U.S. 7th Fleet Sunday.

Five Coast Guard members sustained minor injuries, but the crew was able to get the blaze under control in about 90 minutes and the stricken 418-foot-long cutter arrived at the Navy’s Fleet Forces Yokosuka, Japan, facility Tuesday, according to a Coast Guard statement.

Those injured suffered smoke inhalation, heat exhaustion and an injured knee, Coast Guard spokesman Lt. Cmdr. Stephen Brickey said Wednesday.

The “shipboard engineering fire” was reported at about 5:15 p.m. local time after crew members found fire in the exhaust stack and nearby spaces.

Warzone/The Drive: Russian Warship Kazanets Collided With A Cargo Vessel In The Baltic Sea

The incident occurred in dense fog, but the Russian corvette reportedly had its tracking system deactivated.

A Russian Navy warship has now left Danish waters after colliding with a civilian cargo ship in the Baltic Sea. The mishap involved the Parchim-class corvette Kazanets and the Swiss-owned cargo ship Ice Rose, which is registered in the Marshall Islands.

The collision occurred yesterday, September 23, 2020, south of the five-mile Øresund Bridge that spans the strait between Denmark and Sweden. The Danish Armed Forces, or Forsvaret, announced the following day that the Kazanets had left the area and provided a photo of the damage to the Ice Rose, which subsequently headed north toward the Danish port of Odense. A large gash has been torn on the vessel’s starboard side, towards the stern, penetrating the hull above the waterline.

With an 800-ton displacement and a length of just over 236 feet, the Kazanets is dwarfed by the Ice Rose, which is over 475 feet long and which has a cargo capacity of 14,567 tons.

Navy Times: Navy releases documents from 1963 USS Thresher sinking, deadliest submarine disaster in US history

PORTLAND, Maine — The Navy began releasing documents from the investigation into the deadliest submarine disaster in U.S. history on Wednesday, but the Navy said the documents released under a court order don’t shed any new light on the cause of the sinking.

The first of the documents released were 300 pages from the official inquiry into the sinking of the USS Thresher on April 10, 1963.

The loss of the nuclear-powered submarine and all 129 men aboard during a test dive in the Atlantic Ocean delivered a blow to national pride during the Cold War and became the impetus for safety improvements.

Man overboard was called after the sailor wasn't located aboard the carrier.

The Navy is searching the North Arabian Sea for a missing sailor from the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz.

Man overboard was called after the sailor was not located during a search aboard the carrier, according to a Navy spokesperson.

"The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) and guided-missile cruiser USS Princeton (CG 59) are currently conducting search and rescue operations in the North Arabian Sea following reports of a missing U.S. Navy Sailor, Sept. 6," according to a statement from the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet.

Warzone/The Drive: Navy Chief Says USS Bonhomme Richard Fire Damaged Most Decks, Gutted Island, Warped Flight Deck

Fires also broke out on another Navy amphibious assault ship last week and a carrier under construction this week.

The Navy's top officer says that the fires that burned for four days on the Wasp class amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard last week left 11 of its 14 decks damaged and its island effectively gutted. Meanwhile, there has been a rash of other fire incidents aboard other U.S. Navy ships undergoing work in recent days. A shipyard in Virginia where Navy ships are repaired has resumed normal operations after halting work following a thankfully much less severe fire on Bonhomme Richard's sister ship, USS Kearsarge. Another fire broke out on the future USS John F. Kennedy, a Ford class aircraft carrier under construction at a separate Virginia yard, two days ago.

Virginia-Pilot: Navy chief says USS Bonhomme Richard’s fate uncertain; damage from fire extensive

SAN DIEGO — The USS Bonhomme Richard has extensive structural, electrical and mechanical damage, a top naval chief said Friday after walking into the bowels of the charred warship that burned for more than four days off San Diego.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday pledged a thorough investigation into the Navy's worst U.S. warship fire outside of combat in recent memory. He said the probe will look at what caused the fire as well as whether there were enough sailors on duty when it happened and the circumstances around why a fire suppression system was deactivated when the blaze broke out early Sunday while the ship was docked undergoing maintenance.

The uniformed head of the U.S. Navy said he intends to make the results public.

“We need to go through this, catalog it all and get an understanding of whether or not we had it right,” he said. “And if not, how do we quickly adjust across the fleet to make sure it doesn’t happen again?”

Gilday on Friday went four decks below the flight deck, and then went up above the flight deck and examined the superstructure of the ship.

“I was able to get a good sense of the damage and the damage is extensive,” he said.

The future of the ship remains uncertain.

All Fires Aboard The USS Bonhomme Richard Have Been Extinguished

USA Today: Fire extinguished aboard USS Bonhomme Richard after raging for 4 days

WASHINGTON – Firefighters extinguished the blaze Thursday that had raged aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard for four days at its pier in San Diego, the Navy announced.

Damage to the ship, a small aircraft carrier that ferries Marines to battle, appears extensive, with gaping holes in its deck and damage to its superstructure. Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck said the ship's fate is unclear.

"We do not know the extent of the damage," said Sobeck, commander of Expeditionary Strike Group 3. "It is too early to make any predictions or promises of what the future of the ship will be."

The cause of the fire is unknown, and the investigation won't be launched until crews verify that hot spots don't remain, he said.

Fires are a constant worry for any ship, and every sailor is taught from their earliest days in the service that damage control is everyone’s responsibility. However, that responsibility becomes more complex when a ship is in maintenance. Fewer sailors are typically aboard, and opportunities are greater to spark a fire from welding or other hot work.

The relationship between where the fire started on USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) on Sunday and where maintenance had been taking place is still murky, Navy officials said – with the fire appearing to have originated in the Marine vehicle stowage area near the back of the amphibious assault ship, but no known maintenance work taking place there. Still, this fire comes on the heels of three incidents in the last two years where ships in maintenance suffered damage from fires.

USS Bonhomme Richard Continues To Burn Tuesday 48 Hours After The Fire Broke Out (Updated)

* Hundreds of firefighters battled for a second day, Monday, from the air, land and water to save a U.S. warship

Flames tore through a warship for a second day Monday as a top Navy official revealed that a fire suppression system was inoperable when the blaze erupted while the ship was docked in San Diego.

The U.S. Coast Guard hired an oil clean-up crew to put in place a containment boom that could be ready if any oil is spilled. It also halted boat traffic within 1 nautical mile of the ship and flights over the vessel.

The Navy says it is throwing everything it has at fighting the blaze on the stricken amphibious assault ship as it enters into its 28th hour.

Rear Admiral Philip Sobeck addressed reporters at 11:00 AM local time in San Diego to provide new information on the ongoing fire aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) that has now burned continuously for 27 hours. The press conference follows a terrible night for the ship, which saw the fire expand to its bridge and greater island superstructure, partially melting its upper forward portion. The ship now lists at the pier as firefighting efforts continue at a frantic pace from both the air and the ground.

WNU Editor: Over the years this blog has covered more than its fair share of fires aboard ships. From that background I can say with confidence that this one does not look good. The fact that the USS Bonhomme Richard is now listing (see above video) is especially troubling. I agree with CDR Salamander's analysis. This is a complete loss. At least 21 people including 17 sailors and four civilians were hospitalized with minor injuries on Sunday following a massive fire and explosion on board a Navy ship at Naval Base San Diego that sent billowing plumes of smoke and ash into the sky.

'Seventeen Sailors and four civilians are being treated for non-life threatening injuries at a local hospital,' the US Navy told CNN in a statement.

Fire and rescue crews are on the scene responding to the three-alarm fire on the amphibious assault ship USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6) after the blaze broke out around 8.51am, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said.

About 200 sailors and officers were on board the 840-foot ship Sunday morning. San Diego is the ship’s homeport.

Details still remain limited at this time, but what we know is that an Iranian live-fire naval training event went horribly wrong in the Gulf of Oman when one of the country's own naval vessels was struck by an anti-ship cruise missile on Sunday. The mistake has killed at least 19 Iranian sailors and wounded 15 more. A support ship named Konarak was placing targets for other ships to use for the exercise when the missile, a C-802 Noor, made a direct hit on the vessel.

Images show the vessel's entire upper structure obliterated by the inadvertent strike.

An Iranian warship has accidentally opened fire on one of its own support vessels during a training exercise in the Gulf of Oman, killing 19 and leaving 15 injured.

The Jamaran, a frigate, had been attempting to hit a target with one of its Noor cruise missiles when it accidentally struck a support ship named Konarak instead.

The Konarak had been placing targets for the Janaran to hit but remained too close to one of them causing the missile to lock on to it by mistake, state-run media said.
