William Shatner, who played Capt. James T. Kirk of the Starship Enterprise, says Space Force should use Navy ranks.
Bill Shatner, Military Times: William Shatner wants to know: What the heck is wrong with you, Space Force?
To the very esteemed members of Space Force and other grand poohbahs of the United States government agencies who may have a say in this, I have one question for you:
What the heck is wrong with you?
I’m talking about the ranks of the Space Force!
What are you doing to us? 😱 There was no Colonel Kirk; not even in the mirror universe (which is what 2020 feels like at times.)
Do you know your entertainment space history? 🤔 🤷♂️
Let me show you what I mean.

Update: William Shatner rails against Space Force officer ranks in op-ed (The Hill)
WNU Editor: As a Trekkie I will say that he has a point.

He's not wrong. Space needs Captains and Naval Ranks seems to fit Space Ships better. You have Midshipmans, Lieutenants, Commodores and Admirals.
As a "Trekkie" as well I have tremendous respect for the character Captain James Tibierius Kirk and for better or worse this respect extends to William Shatner the actor who plays the character. For better or worse perhaps we attribute the same character traits to the actor that the character he or she plays has whereas in reality they may not actually be anything like the character they play!! Captain Kirk like all humans has character flaws. If the character did not have flaws we would be unable to relate to them. With that said for all of the flaws Captain Kirk was a serious man.
We should keep in mind that the US is new at this space branch of the military whereas the major powers of Russia and China have been at this awhile and are currently way ahead of us in this endeavor. President Trump recognizing that if the US is to remain relevant much less compete with Russia and China would need a space force and there would be no time like the present to get moving on it pushed very hard to get this facing ridicule and opposition at almost every turn. Since we are new at this, I fully expect us to make some mistakes as we get up to speed and it probably will be sometime before we catch up to Russia and China here. So when I saw the headline William Shatner (Captain Kirk) was critiquing the Officer Corps of Space Force this piqued my curiosity.
Fully expecting him to offer a constructive critique I read the article. After all we are new at this thing so we will will make many mistakes that we will need to learn from. Constructive critiques are helpful as they help us learn. Unfortunately Mr. Shatner's critique centers around the trivial matter of officer titles!! As I was beginning to suspect, William Shatner unlike Captain Kirk the man he plays is not a serious man and is unworthy of special attention.
