Compensation payment pledged for alleged role in bombing of two US embassies.
Washington has removed Sudan from a terrorism blacklist after the country agreed to pay $335m in compensation for its alleged role in the bombing of two US embassies in east Africa by al-Qaida in 1998.
Donald Trump tweeted the news of the deal on Monday. “GREAT news! New government of Sudan, which is making great progress, agreed to pay $335 MILLION to U.S. terror victims and families.
Once deposited, I will lift Sudan from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list. At long last, JUSTICE for the American people and BIG step for Sudan!” he wrote.
Sudan’s transitional government, which took power following the fall of the veteran dictator Omar al-Bashir last year, has in recent months been under increasing pressure from US officials to pay the compensation.

Ultimately it is coming from the international community.

No where did I say do not pay the victims.
I just asked where money was going and where it was coming from.
I imagine it might or could cause the government of Sudan some belt tightening or some pain. But with foreign aid coming in for the US, Germany, the international organization who knows. China will not give aid. They will broker an expensive deal.
The interesting thing was USAID did a study and said that the aid given was not doing much that was positive. The goals were not specific. They were broad brush and not meeting any sort of goal.
Maybe with a 2nd Trump term on top of pulling out of Afghanistan, we can cut more foreign aid. People have properly pointed out that shipping wheat to Africa actually hurt African farmers depressed prices and kept Africa dependent on further aid.
It would also help the US too. It would help balance out budget. People complain that the % is small. But when you are saving a corporation with 6 sigma and other initiatives you take the low hanging fruit besides going after the big projects.
Cutting aid could be a win-win.
