New York Times: McConnell is said to be pleased about impeachment, believing it will be easier to purge Trump from the G.O.P.
Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, has told associates that he believes President Trump committed impeachable offenses and that he is pleased that Democrats are moving to impeach him, believing that it will make it easier to purge him from the party, according to people familiar with his thinking. The House is voting on Wednesday to formally charge Mr. Trump with inciting violence against the country.
At the same time, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the minority leader and one of Mr. Trump’s most steadfast allies in Congress, has asked other Republicans whether he should call on Mr. Trump to resign in the aftermath of the riot at the Capitol last week, according to three Republican officials briefed on the conversations.
While Mr. McCarthy has said he is personally opposed to impeachment, he and other party leaders have decided not to formally lobby Republicans to vote “no,” and an aide to Mr. McCarthy said he was open to a measure censuring Mr. Trump for his conduct. In private, Mr. McCarthy reached out to a leading House Democrat to see if the chamber would be willing to pursue a censure vote, though Speaker Nancy Pelosi has ruled it out.
Taken together, the stances of Congress’s two top Republicans — neither of whom has said publicly that Mr. Trump should resign or be impeached — reflected the politically challenging and fast-moving nature of the crisis that the party faces after the assault by a pro-Trump mob during a session to formalize President-elect Joseph R. Biden Jr.’s electoral victory.

WNU Editor: Regular readers of this blog know what I think about the New York Times and their use of anonymous sources when it comes to President Trump .... they have a history of always being wrong.
But is the New York Times right for once?
I do not know what is in U.S. Senator Mitch McConnell's mind. But I do know that the Republican base has always been consistent in their overwhelming support of President Trump. 75 million of them voted for him in the last Presidential election, and that support has not wavered. But has U.S. Senator McConnell made the decision to not only going against his party's base .... but to also purge much of it?!?!?!?

Purging your base is a guarantee that your political party will be annihilated in any future elections.
Is that the legacy that Senator Mitch McConnell wants to leave behind? I have my doubts, but we shall see.

Neither McConnell nor McCarthy have said that they support the impeachment of President Trump. Any RINO backstabber who endorses the removal of Trump is political toast.

If the story is not true, then it is psy ops of such magnitude that the New York Times cannot be considered truthful media.
They would have to be considered enemedia. I regret I once had a subscription to that rag.
Whether McConell said it or not, I doubt he hasn't thought it, along with the other RINO globalists. Over the last 30 years, it's become clear that the Republican Party is not "in to win," but rather to offer an alternative, "conservative" path to globalism. McCain and Romney come to mind. As with the river Jordan, so the song goes, the DC swamp is deep and wide. Too deep and wide to drain during one presidency. The globalists have had 50 years to hone their message and adapt it to every facet of modern society, while during that time conservatives became content with being comfortably numb. We lost sight of past lessons and thus conceded the future as well. It will take a least a generation to gain back lost ground, but I personally think it is too late to make up lost ground. We have squandered our chance. Hang on for a (very) bumpy ride.
Mitch is in the swamps pocket.
Purging one man from the GOP will cost the GOP 10’s of million of voters and many billions of annual campaign contributions. Stupid. Cocaine Mitch isn’t stupid. This strategy will make the GOP a state wide party in some regions but not a nationwide party.
More likely is this. Trump is plotting to purge RINO’s and Never Trumpers from the senate GOP.
