CANCUN, Mexico (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Ted Cruz flew into a storm of criticism on Thursday after leaving his home state of Texas in the grip of a deadly deep freeze, for a family holiday jaunt to the Mexican resort of Cancun he said he took to please his young daughters.
“It was obviously a mistake. In hindsight, I wouldn’t have done it,” the 50-year-old Republican told reporters as he returned to Houston.
Cruz said he had planned to stay through the weekend, but had second thoughts “almost the moment I sat down on the plane.”
In text messages obtained by American Bridge, a Democratic political group, Cruz’s wife Heidi asked neighbors whether they wanted to accompany the family to Cancun.

"It looks like his staff are on top of this..." To the extent that they're providing resources to the state and localities and staying out of their way, this is good. POTUS doesn't need to make an appearance here. Such appearances are for optics only.
As for Senator Cruz, while he is correct ob pointing out that with modern technology he can do all his necessary work from Mexico, the optics of this are terrible. Combine this with the fact that he wasn't exactly popular before this storm and he's despised by the media makes matters many orders of magnitude worhere.
He should've known better. Normally he would have. I'd be interested in knowing what his thought processes were hete.

I do know that I will grab a beer, watch a movie or go on vacation and enjoy myself and some where, someone will be in distress. But I will go on enjoying myself and it is is what people world wide do and have to do.
I remember working in steel foundry and some contract field engineers were setting up a steel wire land. These field engineers were very good at their job. They made beaucoup money. They were smart and made a lot of money and I did not want to be one. They would spend 3 to 6 months wherever away from home setting up a manufacturing line. Setting a new manufacturing line is sexy. Making a lot of money is sexy. However, missing family sucks. I did not want to be one.
Anywho the wire line would have test runs and they would not always go right. Wire would go everywhere. All the company engineers would runout to the line and join the field engineers. They would not do anything. They would talks some, but mainly just watch. If they were not there, it would be bad, bad for their career. They di not have the knowledge needed in that particular engineering field, but they had to stand around and looked concerned. Optics.
A few people died in Texas due to carbon monoxide. It happens every year in many states. But optics.
