NBC: Joe Biden bets a war-weary America will reward him for leaving Afghanistan
"It's hard to see Republicans winning elections on a campaign promise to go back to war in Afghanistan in 2022 or 2024," says a Democratic consultant.
WASHINGTON — President Joe Biden is standing firmly by his decision to withdraw U.S. forces from Afghanistan, despite chaotic scenes of the Taliban rapidly seizing control and the U.S. rushing to airlift diplomats out of the country.
Behind his confidence is a political bet that a war-weary U.S. public will stick with him and enable him to weather a firestorm of criticism, not just from his Republican opposition but also from Democratic allies who promise to investigate failures surrounding the withdrawal.
Public support for the withdrawal has fallen from earlier this year, but pluralities still want U.S. forces out, according to two new surveys.

WNU Editor: Leaving is not the issue for most Americans. Most support such a policy including this blogger. It is how the administration went about leaving Afghanistan that has riled up everyone.
You do break your promise that you will back them, and worse , you do not abandon people in such a way.
Make no mistake about it. There will be a political cost for it.

Free healthcare is too sensible and civilized for America.
The poor lack the proper moral fortitude necessary for preventive healthcare; thus deserve punishment with pain, suffering, and an early demise.
I've been skeptical as to long-term political costs from this. How many people in America care enough about Afghanistan or Afghans to let it influence their vote? Especially in general elections - even if they care to some degree, they surely care about thwarting other Americans more. A hostage crisis could do it, though.
