Russian Stocks Collapse Over War Fears

CNBC: Russian stocks sink 8%, ruble plunges to 14-month low as conflict fears intensify

* Russian assets have been mired in volatility in recent weeks after a build-up of around 100,000 Russian troops along the Ukrainian border sparked fears from Western powers that Moscow was planning an invasion, an allegation the Kremlin has persistently denied.

* Anders Aslund, senior fellow at the Atlantic Council and chairman of the International Advisory Council at the Center for Social and Economic Research, tweeted Friday that Russian assets could fall further.

The stand-off between Russia and the West over Ukraine sent Russian assets tumbling on Monday.

As of Monday afternoon in Europe, the MOEX Russia Index had dropped around 5.9% and is now down more than 15% year-to-date.

The Russian RTS Index was down 8.1% on the day and around 19% lower so far in 2022.

The Russian ruble was down 2.5% against the dollar at 79.17, its lowest since late 2020.

Update #2: Russian stocks collapse as U.S. orders diplomat families out of Ukraine (Market Watch)

Update #3: Ruble tumbles as Ukraine tensions rumble (RT)

WNU Editor: A few weeks ago I posted that if tensions over Ukraine were to continue to rise it would be best for Russian businesses and individuals to have no debt and be vested in cash, hard assets, and precious metals. And if the worse case scenario does unfold, those who are liquid will have a lot of opportunities to make a killing. Sad to say that this is what is happening now.

But as bad as the markets are reacting in Russia, the situation is beyond terrible right now in Ukraine .... Ukraine bonds sink into distress (Warsaw Business Journal). This article from RT (of all places) is also right that Ukraine will not be able to fulfill its debt obligations if the current environment continues .... Ukraine could default, economist warns (RT).

wanker leaves a useless link, but wanker was never that bright.

First, it is paywalled.

Second, it is the passive aggressive tactics of a low down weasel-faced girlie boy.

Third, digging a little, a person finds that it is an essay written by Fiona Hill.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/declassified-fbi-notes-show-steele-claimed-fiona-hill-knew-about-dossier-source/ar-BB1d0RCb

Which MSN graciously took down from their site for reasons ...

Declassified FBI notes show Steele claimed Fiona Hill knew about Dossier Source

Mark Hemingway of RealClearInvestigations wrote:
"The fact Fiona Hill was central to both spreading the Steele Dossier and ginning up the first Trump impeachment ought to set off klaxons."

Yeah, that Fiona Hill and girlie boy is pushing her junk.

The Fiona Hill who assisted Igor Danchenko, who might be a Russian agent and who has been indicted. Of course the MSM stopped reporting on Danchenko. It is Biden's best interest of the FBI drops the whole thing and then it times out.

Fiona Hill is not a person to be listened to. When you speak ill of an external enemy/competitor (as Psaki would outgas) after having bludgeoning you national political opponents to death, you have no leg to stand on. But PhD girlie boy, wanker thinks that is some funny shit.

Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom

Here is Dr. Patrick Moore's description of his unique thesis as presented in "Fake Invisible Catastrophes and Threats of Doom"."It dawned on me one day that most of the scare stories in the media today are based on things that are either invisible, like CO2 and radiation, or very remote, like polar bears and coral reefs. Thus, the average person cannot observe and verify the truth of these claims for themselves. They must rely on activists, the media, politicians, and scientists - all of whom have a huge financial and/or political interest in the subject - to tell them the truth. This is my effort, after 50 years as a scientist and environmental activist, to expose the misinformation and outright lies used to scare us and our children about the future of the Earth. Direct observation is the very basis of science. Without verified observation it is not possible to know the truth. That is the sharp focus of this book."The book contains 98 color photographs, illustrations, and charts. A key target audience is parents who do not approve of the "progressive" school curriculum and its alarmism about the future of civilization and the natural world. Dr. Moore hopes these parents will read his book and pass it on to their high-school and older children to give them an alternative to the bleak future predicted by the prophets of doom. Many other audiences will also find the book informative and convincing. In 11 chapters the reader is clearly shown that citizens are being misinformed by many environmental doomsday prophesies, ones they cannot verify for themselves. We are told that nuclear energy is very dangerous when the numbers prove it is one of the safest technologies. We are told polar bears will go extinct soon when their population has been growing steadily for nearly 50 years. We are told that there is something harmful in genetically modified food crops when it is invisible, has no name and no chemical formula. We are told severe forest fires are caused by climate change when they are actually caused by poor management of fuel load (dead wood) in the forest. We are told that all the coral reefs will die by 2100 when in fact the most diverse coral reefs are found in the warmest oceans in the world. And of course, we are told that invisible CO2 from using fossil fuels, accounting for more than 80 percent of our energy supply, will make the Earth too hot for life. All of these scare stories, and many more, are simply not true. And this book will convince you, your family, and your colleagues of that. There is no substitute for the truth.Dr. Patrick Moore was one of the co-founders of Greenpeace and sailed on the first Greenpeace campaign against US H-bomb tests in Alaska. Upon receiving his PhD in ecology, he spent 15 years in the top committee of Greenpeace and led many of its environmental campaigns. Greenpeace began as a group of volunteers with noble intentions. Over the years it became very successful with campaigns to save the whales, stop the mass slaughter of baby seals, prevent toxic dumping into the air, water and earth, and many more. Greenpeace found itself in the early 1980s with more than $100 million coming in annually and close to 1,000 people on the payroll. It had become a business and fundraising moved to the top of the priority list. New campaigns were more about using sensationalism, misinformation and fear to attract donations. Dr. Moore said good-bye in 1986 as Greenpeace was turning into a racket peddling junk science. Since then he has strived to be a sensible environmentalist, basing his beliefs on sound science and logical thinking."

Ms. Hill was an intelligence officer on Russia and Eurasian affairs for Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and served on the National Security Council under President Donald Trump.

You have no language, at least nothing that would qualify as such, people use it in the hope it's something you understand, you are lying trash.

That doesn't make what she says right, regardless of who listened to her.

Fred Lapides is very innovative. He combined the as populum and argumentum ad verecundiam logical fallacies.

About Fiona Hill. A person's track record can get worse over time. A person's track record can be hit and miss.

Fiona Hill is smart and sometimes wise. A lot of people are smart. Meyer Lansky studied calculus on his spare time out of self improvement or boredom. Lansky was a bright guy. You would not give a government job just because he is bright. Ditto Fiona Hill. She broke the law with the Steele Dossier and other stuff.

NYT paper of record?

"A newspaper of record is a major newspaper with large circulation whose editorial and news-gathering functions are considered authoritative."

Is there a poll to back up that 51% or more of people consider it a paper of record? I use to have subscription, No longer. What we have seen is that the NYT is losing readership. So, paper of record?

I looked up what paper of record meant. I look up a lot of things, because I do not want to think I am making sense, when I am not.

"It may also refer to a newspaper that has been authorised to publish public or legal notices, thus serving as a newspaper of public record."

I was actually part of that process for a state. In short I know what a paper of record is.

* According to The New York Times readership demographics, 91% of its readers identify as Democrats.

* 49% of Americans believe Times is a trustworthy news source.

* The number of print subscribers dropped by 7.4% in 2020.

* Between 2000 and 2020, The New York Times’ daily circulation decreased by 55.7%.

Clearly, the NYT is a not a paper of record. 49% ?

Mark H. listed more often than not as the husband of the more important writer Mollie Hemingway.
he writes for ...oh, sure; mostly if not always, right-wing media. And what has he said then about Finona? Her name should ring claxons...Now that is getting at real information.

Why?

1) I use your epithets in replying to you so other people know, who I am replying to.

2) If you use an epithet, it is safe to sue it back at you.

3) You remind me of quail. I do not need a pointer, but there you are. All vinegar and piss.

I can calculate the force of gravity. Can you?

The virus is real. The argument is does the case fatality rate support the use of the government mandates? That would consist of comparing numbers.

The deficit. Worrying about reserve currency status, the budget, etc is a conservative issue.

You avoided talking about global warming in your reply. You deflected by firing your blunderbuss in a scatter shot pattern. could you discuss with Dr. Patrick Moore about what a good range of CO2 would be?

It is the paper (and also Wash Post) read by politically interested folks. And telling us print dropped and ignoring digital is shabby and transparent bullshit

4. The number of New York Times’ digital subscribers has been growing steadily since 2014.

(Statista)

Unlike many competitors, The Times has managed to grow its digital subscriber base each quarter for the past seven years. From 799,000 digital subscribers in Q1 2014, the number has gone up to an all-time high of 5.09 million in Q4 2020 — an impressive 537% increase.
5. In 2020 alone, the paper added 1.66 million digital subscribers.
You do not like CNN but how many posts are at this very site. and you read them.

Is The New York Times still the newspaper of record?
The Times has since won 132 Pulitzer Prizes, the most of any newspaper, and has long been regarded within the industry as a national "newspaper of record". It is ranked 18th in the world by circulation and 3rd in the U.S.

Does that mean it always tells the truth, answer Lapides.

Anonymous said...

How many of those awards went to Duranty, Freddy?

Anonymous said...

So what if they're read. Does that make them true? Just because (according to you) subscriptions increased, does that make Times content true?

Anonymous said...

Just because you are politically interested does that make you right and anything you read correct by virtue of you reading it?

Anonymous said...

1.66 million digital subscribers. From where? Overseas? They do not say.

They tell how many new subscribers there are. How about former subscriber?

If the paper is read only or almost only by Democrats how can it be a paper of record? One party state?
