Ukraine President Zelensky Says Rebuilding Ukraine Will Cost More Than $1 Trillion

Zero Hedge: D.C. Think Tank Urges America To "Invest" In Zelensky's $1 Trillion Reconstruction Plan

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a video address on Tuesday estimated it will cost more than $1 trillion to rebuild his country following the Russian assault, now over nine months in.

If this number sounds absolutely shocking and unrealistic... it is, given this would be five times Ukraine's entire GDP.

"The reconstruction of our country will become the most momentous economic, technological, and humanitarian project of our time. Even now, we engage dozens of our partner countries to rebuild Ukraine," Zelensky said during his nightly video address Tuesday, translated by Newsweek.

"The total volume of work amounts to over a trillion dollars."

WNU Editor: The Ukraine President is dreaming if he thinks the West is going to give him a check for $1 trillion. His only hope is that the West forces Russia to pay reparations of $1 trillion. Again. He is dreaming if that is going to happen.

So what is the bottom line?

When the war is finally over, Ukraine (or what is left of it) will find itself in debt to the West for hundreds of billions of dollars because of weapons purchases and loan guarantees.

Ukraine will be a failed state and divided up by the wolves of NATO. Zelensky should be getting the Benito Mussolini treatment for destroying his country and goading what will be millions to there deaths on behalf of NATO

Difficult to be more wrong than you are here.

There was a Marshall Plan after Ww2. It had to have been successful, because we are talking of Europe's decline. You cannot decline, if you were not built up in the 1st place.

Poor countries do not make good trading partners. Keeping Ukraine as rubble would make no sense.

Ukraine could have the simple expedient that any companies, corporations or subsidiaries have to have 51% or more Ukrainian ownership. This is the law in Japan and Brasil. I have not heard of Japan or Brasil referred to as colonies of anyone in the last 70 years.

No free Ukraine >>> No Russian Nation.

No. He is pretty much spot on. Ukraine will be a basket case for years to come.

Marshay plan worked because of Two items.
1 It had good supervision and oversight.
2, The governmens receiving that money actually cared about thie citizens.

You have neither in the Ukraine. So it will fail.
Most of that money will be siphoned off, just like the weapons money is today.
A black hole of corruption.

Does the federal govt have any plan to pay off it's own 31 trillion debt? I think Ukraine can rest soundly on the knowledge that none of this money actually exists. Just keep pretending that it does and resources will continue to flow until the wealth of the citizenry is so diluted that the system itself fails.

Ukraine is so corrupt that Russia has not conquered it in over 9 months despite being 3 times the size.

That alone nominates Russia for being the most corrupt.

Anonymous said...

No, it nominates the Russian military for being incompetent.

Corruption is a different problem. And who cares about Russian corruption?? That is the Russians problem.

The problem with the Ukies being corrupt??? Well that is American taxpayers money going down the rat hole, so that makes us care a lot.

Not a dime for the Ukrainians.

And....you can say all you want about the need to help the Ukrainians, for many of us we see no strategic value in that country and we should not be involved.

Sorry not my problem. You should not have listened to our State department and Government. believe me, most of us have learned not to believe a thing they say.

That’s exactly right

No doubt the cost of rebuilding Ukraine after the war will result in the same systemic poverty that Germany, Japan, and South Korea faced after WWII and the Korean War left their homelands a permanent bombed out wasteland.

To be serious, of course corruption would be a huge problem in rebuilding Ukraine. That has to be tackled. It is unfortunate we are not hearing about any reforms being pushed through now during the conflict.

South Korea initially suffered from rebuilding because of large corruption. Eventually the US tied aid to reform. The EU and US will do the same to Ukraine if it does not sufficiently reform on its own.

Ukraine certainly has the human capital to rebuild itself which is the most important thing. There is a very large number of highly educated Ukrainian engineers, scientists, and businessmen. Rebuilding aid only needs to be limited in restoring basic infrastructure and utilities and immediate humanitarian aid. Everything else can be taken care of by the Ukrainian themselves over time.

The frontline cities will be heavily destroyed and require much rebuilding. But the damage by Russian missiles and drones towards Ukrainian cities' critical infrastructure in the unoccupied and uninvaded hinterland will not take much time to rebuild, and the vast majority of those cities will be left mainly intact. There isn't the complete devastation of the entire country left in Europe and Korea after those wars.
