Global Chinese Firms Are 'Decoupling' From China

CNA/SCMP: Global Chinese firms try ‘decoupling’ from China as business climate turns hostile

* In the United States, “Made in China” and “China-based” labels are now politically toxic

* Public relations specialists note a growing trend of some Chinese companies positioning themselves as being from places like Hong Kong, Singapore or New York, while having an official headquarters in China

* Between perceived security threats and an emphasis on new supply chain alternatives, US policies have left Chinese firms scrambling for cover

The communications manager of a multinational tech corporation that makes sustainable smart devices in China stressed that it is a global company, not Chinese.

The company’s public relations materials say it has “operational headquarters” in the United States, Europe and another Asian country, but don’t mention Shenzhen – though its official website names Shenzhen on top under “headquarters”. And the company plans to move its manufacturing somewhere outside China.

Founded by a young Chinese tech entrepreneur five years ago, the green energy business has a current market value of more than US$1 billion, a leader in its field.

Yet the communications manager spoke on condition of anonymity, both for the company and herself, due to the sensitivity of the issue.

That’s because in the US, “Made in China” and “China-based” – once-proud labels for many businesses with ambitions of promoting Chinese ingenuity and quality in international markets – are now politically toxic, often drawing regulatory scrutiny and public distrust.

WNU Editor: The trend of global Chinese companies moving out of China is nothing new. For decades I have seen Chinese entrepreneurs, business owners, and leaders explore and implement strategies to move a part (or most) of their business overseas. And it has nothing to do with business, and all about having a place abroad where they and their family can have an alternative place to live away from China.

In my consulting business I have helped far more businesses in China open shop in Canada than Canadian companies opening shop in China. In every Chinese case the main reason was to make Canada a second home for their families. In every Canadian case the main reason was to make money in China.

WNU, that's not quite right..
of course relocation often has to do with business, to get around regulations, get investment, for PR...
you should know this if you claim to consult/help Chinese businesses. The list is endless, but yes, personal reasons - I would agree - make a surprisingly large portion. However I highly doubt these companies you consulted would have told you in private about their concerns about e.g. the CCP or the situation in China. Chinese rarely talk about such private attitudes towards politics.

Would recommend to take your expertise on China with a bit of salt :P

Actually. The Chinese do talk a lot on politics. And they are not shy in voicing disapproval of CCP policies or specifically on what Beijing is doing.

Where they stop themselves is to not go in front of a camera to voice their disapproval. But in private. Are you kidding me. They are not robots. After a few drinks it all comes out.

Your pulling our leg. The robots come in 3 colors of Mao suits. Green, blue and grey with no flair.

China has brought this upon itself. Seems like incredibly bad timing to not be painted by others, but paint itself as the bad guy. Historically China may have been quite good at playing the long game, but now they're burning through whatever "benefit of the doubt" capital they may have built up over the last 20 years.

Not sure which Chinese YOU know.. the ones I know - are VERY careful talking about the CCP, even living abroad. And having been to China often enough I call BS on your China knowledge stories :P
