Aftershocks and freezing weather hamper efforts of rescue teams searching for survivors after 7.8-magnitude quake
Aftershocks, freezing temperatures and damaged roads are hampering efforts to tackle the enormous humanitarian emergency triggered by Monday’s 7.8-magnitude earthquake in southern Turkey and northern Syria, with 7,800 people now confirmed dead and 380,000 others seeking refuge in Turkey alone.
As the scale of the devastation from the initial quake – and a second tremor – became clearer, the Turkish authorities declared a state of emergency in 10 provinces and the World Health Organization warned that the number of fatalities could exceed 20,000.

Turkey's last major earthquake was in 1999. Some 17,000 people died. Died as a result of being crushed in shoddily built buildings that could not withstand the violent side-to-side motion of a 7.8 magnitude quake. Their government has had 23 years to decide to improve their building codes or just continue with the lazy corruption that Turkey is known for. Looks like they chose the latter.
This death toll will be massive. It all falls on the corrupt scumbag they have as their current president and his predecessor. It will take years to rebuild from the damage. At enormous cost. Hopefully now they will improve their buildings instead of pocketing the money and letting their cities be constructed out of mud.
This is good. Call it a silver lining.
NATO ally(?), Turkey, ha been laying claim to the Mediterranean sea form Turkey to Libya. this is enough to start wars. Regional wears that could get bigger. Erdogan has been saber rattling for a decade. Maybe this will slow him down.
What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
If the Germans got what they deserved for not taking out Hitler, does the same not apply to Erdagon or people like him?
And Joe Biden ahs done shit about it.
To think that one good-sized earthquake can kill many times the people who were killed in the Twin Towers. Really puts things in perspective.
Nice way of diminishing 911. One was an act of god the other an act of man.
